Brendan Thomas Malone (born April 21, 1942) is an American basketball coach.

Early life

Malone grew up in Astoria, Queens, and graduated from Rice High School. The Railway Express Agency, as well as Malone's father, Brendan, unloaded freight cars. Malone enrolled at Iona College in the 1970s. He appeared in only one game for the Iona Gaels' men's basketball team in 1960 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1962.

Coaching career

Queens then became a CYO basketball coach for the Church of the Most Precious Blood, and then became a junior varsity basketball coach at Power Memorial Academy in 1967. In 1968, Malone enrolled at New York University and graduated with a master's degree in physical education. Malone, a 1970 to 1976, was a varsity basketball coach at Power Memorial and led Power Memorial to two city championships. Malone received three "Coach of the Year" awards during his six-year tenure.

Malone later served as an assistant coach at Fordham (1976–1978), Yale (1977–1978), and Syracuse (1978–1984 under Jim Boeheim), before becoming the head coach at Rhode Island from 1984 to 1986. In 1986, Malone began his NBA coaching career as an assistant for the New York Knicks and spent two seasons as an assistant. Malone joined the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach under Chuck Daly in 1988. Malone lived in Detroit from 1995 to 1995 and also worked under Ron Rothstein in the 1992–93 season and Don Chaney from 1995 to 1995. Malone served as a basketball coach for the Pistons in 1989 and 1990 NBA championship titles.

Malone was appointed as the first head coach (1995–96) of the Toronto Raptors, one of Canada's two 1995 NBA expansion teams. Isiah Thomas, the Raptors' general manager of the time, had hired Malone. Malone was long considered the NBA's top authority on protecting Michael Jordan, particularly after orchestrating Detroit Piston defenses that kept Jordan's Bulls out of the NBA Finals for some time. Malone lasted only as head coach of the Raptors for one season, going 21-61, but the championship Bulls lost one of their few games of the season. Malone spent time with the Indiana Pact, New York Pistons, and as a consultant with the Seattle SuperSonics. In 2004,-2005, he was the interim head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Malone was one of four assistants hired by Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy on July 3, 2007. He was hired as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings on June 25, 2013, by head coach Mike Malone, who himself was hired earlier this month. However, his resignation was announced on October 23, 2013, citing the "rigors of coaching in the NBA" as the reason. Malone was one of three assistants hired to work under new Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy on May 30, 2014.
