Brendan James Life

Brendan James (born July 17, 1979) is an American, piano-based singer/songwriter from Derry, New Hampshire.

James spent his early music career playing at New York City open mics before he signed to Capitol Records in 2005.

At Capitol he spent a year and a half recording his debut album, but was dropped before its release during the Capitol Records/Virgin Records merger in 2007.

After leaving Capitol, he self-produced and released an EP, The Ballroom Break-in.

He signed to Decca Records in 2008 and has released two studio albums with the label.

His debut album, The Day is Brave, was released in 2008, while his self-titled second album, Brendan James, came out in 2010.

He has toured nationally to support the albums, including tours with artists such as Jason Reeves, John Mayer, Tyrone Wells, Matt White, and Amber Rubarth.

Early life

James was born Brendan James Ernst in Nashua, New Hampshire on July 17, 1979, to parents Patricia and Randy, and is of Irish and German descent. He moved to Derry, New Hampshire, when he was four and, after the divorce of his parents, alternated living between Derry and nearby Manchester, New Hampshire. James had an early interest in performing and singing, leading him to perform in school plays and musicals while growing up. He attended high school at Pinkerton Academy in Derry. After the death of a friend's mother, James sang "Candle in the Wind" at her funeral with a local music teacher he knew, Kevin Kandel, accompanying him on piano. The collaboration began a friendship between the two and Kandel helped spur James's interest in music.

Brendan James Career

Music career

After graduating from high school, James went to college at the University of North Carolina, first as a voice major before shifting to Communications. During breaks from school, he'll return to Derry and speak with Kandel, who begged James to learn an instrument. At the age of 19, James began teaching himself piano and writing and composing songs. James returned to the University of North Carolina to join the Clef Hangers, a cappella group. He will perform solo covers of "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Father Figure," and "Die Without You" songs that were later released on compilation CDs from the group, as well as "I Can't Make You Love Me." He left UNC and went to Hollywood during his junior year of college, in order to pursue a career in music. During his stay on the condition that he completes an internship at a company related to his Communications degree, he earned college credit. While living in Los Angeles, he performed at The Crooked Bar (located under the Coconut Teaszer), both performing and performing. After his service, he returned to the University of North Carolina to complete his Communications degree, which he obtained in 2002.

Since graduating from college, James wanted to return to Los Angeles and concentrate on his music, as well as paying a rent deposit for an LA apartment. Following a day visit to New York City, however, he changed his plans and decided to move to New York City. To support himself, he worked at Urban Outfitters. He worked in the East Village for three years, as well as at open mikes. Around this time, he began breaking into various hotels, ballrooms, and schools to learn how to play with pianos so he could practice. In 2003, he partnered with Ben Singer, a former classmate James, who had attended UNC for the first time. Ben helped him produce a demo that eventually made its way to Carly Simon, who invited James to join her and record a song with her. At the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, "Let the River Run" will perform.

In 2005, James will record another demo, this time in Woodstock, New York, by Tony Bruno of the Millbrook Sound Studio, this time in Woodstock, New York. The demonstration attracted the attention of major labels and James did a showcase at The Living Room in New York City for several record companies. Following the preview, James was invited to Los Angeles to compete for Capitol Records CEO Andrew Slater. Slater has signed a record contract, and James spent the next year and a half on his debut album, which also worked with producers Tony Bruno and Patrick Leonard. The album's production was plagued with difficulties: re-recording, contentions over artistic direction, and the wait for official label decisions pushed the process. After re-recording the album with a new producer, it was nearly ready to be announced when James was dropped from Capitol Records following the merger and takeover of Capitol by Virgin Records. James, as well as many other artists, was kicked out of the newly formed company, but he was allowed to keep his master tapes and was given a severance package.

James, who lives in New York, grew up and performed on Capitol's music, deciding to make the album himself. In 2007, Michael Blue, a Los Angeles-based producer, turned it into James' own EP, The Ballroom Break-In, and became James' self-released EP The Ballroom Break-In. The EP was based on his early days in New York City, when he first stepped into venues to practice playing and writing songs on a piano. "Hero's Song" on iTunes after the EP's debut, Tomas Young, a wounded Iraq war soldier, heard one of the EP's, "Hero's Song." Body of War, Young's favorite song, was chosen to be on a soundtrack to a film about his life. His EP's music was also used in television shows, including "The Sun Will Rise" which appeared on ABC's Private Practice in 2007. The Day Is Brave follows James and Blue's introduction of The Ballroom Break-in with a full length album. The EP and a few of the Capitol songs were included in the album, but it also contained new James' written material. As his EP's fame grew, including a spotlight on Perez Hilton, James discovered major record labels. He signed with Decca Records in 2008.

Brendan James' debut album, The Day Is Brave, was released in the United States on June 3, 2008, and in Canada on June 17, 2008. It debuted on the top 10 Billboard Heatseeker Charts, with Newsweek and Entertainment Weekly lauding his debut. The album's single was "Green" and a music video for the song was made. James first toured regionally to promote the album, as well as openings for musicians including Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend, Susan Tedeschi, and Robert Cray. James spent his first national tour on MTV SoundTRACKER Tours at the end of 2008.

After the MTV Soundtracker Tour had ended, writing for James' second album began in early 2009. Since moving from New York City to Los Angeles, where he is now based, James has spent considerable time there in the last few years. The second album, James, was "far more difficult to write than my first." He flew to London to make the album, but the production work that was done there was cancelled. He began working with producer Warren Huart in Los Angeles and finished the album there. James embarked on more touring, including tours with Mayer's Mayercraft Carrier 2 in March 2009 and one sponsored by scooter-maker Vespa in May 2009. Jason Reeves and Amber Rubarth's "green tour" was held on the California coast while focusing on environmental friendliness, according to Vespa. James was also appearing on more television shows, such as So You Think You Can Dance, Bones, and Army Wives.

Brendan James' second album, titled Brendan James, was released on September 7, 2010. The album debuted at No. 1 in the United States. It's now 93 on the Billboard 200, making it more popular than his previous albums. The album's single was called "The Fall" and a music video was created, this time starring Melissa Ordway as the female lead. As part of the album sales, the song "Stupid for Your Love" was also available on James' website for free. Through 2010, touring to help the album continued well into early 2011, with a notable tour with singer Matt White.

In November 2011, James revealed on Twitter that he was planning to release a new album of ten songs in February 2012. This was pushed back to July 2012.

Max Coane's album Hope in Transition was released by him, but Julian Coryell added two tracks. Bill Mims, Chandler Harrod, Max Coane, and Jeff Hannan developed engineering. Jeff Hannan, Max Coane, and Erich Gobel also contributed to the mixing. Gavin Lurssen was aided by Reuben Cohen on the album's mastery.

"Hope in Transition" was released by Rock Ridge Music on July 10, 2012.

During March and April 2013, Brendan opened for Tyrone Wells on his US tour. Brendan James launched a Kickstarter campaign on March 19, 2013 to raise funds to promote his new album, which he said was "almost done." "This album, primarily recorded live with my touring band, and inspired by my idols' style – James Taylor, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and others," he said. He had raised $26,139 of his $20,000 target in fewer than ten days, with 15 days remaining in the program, with a total of $33,948 raised at the end of the funding period.

"Simplify" was released on August 6, 2013.

'Wish You Well', Brendan's non-album single, was released in 2018. On April 3, 2019, it was included in the Australian TV soap 'Neighbours'.

On October 20, 2020, his most recent album "Leap Taken" was released.
