OLIVER HOLT: I have seen many things that have filled me with wonder and joy during the seven summer Olympic Games that I have covered. I have seen the white sails of the Mistrals and the 470s and the Lasers skimming and whipping and dashing across the waters of Sydney Harbour under an azure sky in 2000.

Tom Pidcock defended his Olympic mountain bike title in dramatic fashion today as the Team GB star battled on despite a puncture during the race, to clinch gold in stunning style. The cyclist, 24, who previously won gold at Tokyo 2020 , held his Olympic title at the race today, just 16 days since he pulled out of the Tour de France because of a positive Covid test. Despite the unfortunate puncture mid race, the impassioned cyclist fought to bring home gold for Team GB, neatly closing the gap between competitors in the final lap. The bony faced 24-year-old will no doubt be celebrating the win with his girlfriend of five years, Bethany Louise Zajac, who watched eagerly from the sidelines as the cyclist brought home victory for Team GB.
JEFF POWELL: Critics of the Athens 2004 Olympics were expecting 'a building site Games' but Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki ensured that Greece produced a modern miracle

JEFF POWELL: It was 3am of a moonlit night in Athens, just one week before the opening ceremony for the 2004 Summer Games, as the First Lady of the Olympics put on a hard hat and set out to spur on construction workers as they raced to beat that deadline. This was by no means the first - nor the last - of the many times Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki delivered flasks of coffee and her patriotic message to men and women working around the clock to deliver what a mocking world was calling 'impossibly Greek.' Her objective on this particular occasion was to inspire a sprint finish to completion of the new Tram line, which would carry the crowds from the city centre to the Olympic Stadium. The track was still a kilometre or so short of the final stop, which itself was not quite finished.

The London 2012 Olympics are seen by many as some of Britain's most glorious days - with memories of a warm summer shining bright on the country's sporting promise. It's also where many sporting heroes became household names, with the likes of Bradley Wiggins (pictured left), Mo Farah and Rebecca Adlington (pictured right) claiming medals in their respective events. But in the 12 years that have passed since and, as another tournament in Paris approaches, Team GB 's stars have experienced very differing fortunes since the games. From one's star's bankruptcy to doping allegations and multiple marriage splits, success at London 2012 seems to have come with a lasting curse for some of its participants. Here, FEMAIL takes a look at where the London 2012 heroes are now, and the tragedies that have faced them since. Pictured centre right to centre left: Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy.

Stan Knight, a retired former England cyclist, abused the Tour de France champion and some others at the Archer Road Club in Acton, west London, in 2003. He had not been identified by his first name before today, and that was before today. In Litton Cheney, Dorset, the knight will take the sporting child away from home for training camps and into a youth hostel. The Times reports that his sex abuser would persist in sleeping in his bed and grope him in the shower. Another of Knight's victims spoke about violence that was similar to that of the Tour de France champion and four-time OIympic gold winner. He was also abused in the 1990s at the same hostel, 'fondling' him during sports massages. One family has raised questions about Knight, as well as allegations concerning other young children, according to reports. 'Stan was totally useless as a coach,' one of his victims said today.' He was like a kid, a complete idiot. It was as if he used the club just to be around boys. At the club, there are some important questions to answer regarding British Cycling and safeguarding.'

A German writer shared today how she was left in utter shock after a scandalous ballet director allegedly smeared his dog Gustav's faeces over her face after she described one of his performances as "boring" and "disjointed." Wiebke Hüster, 57, a journalist, said Marco Goecke, the opera house's ballet company's director, approached her during the interval of his performance on Saturday night and 'blocked her way' before accusing her of'writing poorly.' Goecke, 50, recovered a bag of dog faeces, who had been freshly made by his Dachshund Gustav just minutes before, removed the excrement from her face in front of'shocked' onlookers, according to Hüster, a dance critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). However, Hüster's occurrence isn't the first time an artist or their relative has come out at a critic. Here's how other creatives have retaliated on their critics, from a writer savaged in a £16,000 ad to Jeanette Winterson turning up on reviewers' doorsteps.
