Racing career
Coleman was discovered by LeMans champion Price Cobb in Houston at an indoor karting center. At the age of 16, he set a record in Daytona, where he and his colleagues finished 7th in the GT class, making them the youngest team in history to drive and complete the legendary race.
He made his first competitive stock car racing debut in the ARCA Re/Max Series at Nashville Superspeedway on April 15, 2006, where he came in second place after extensive preparation and racing in stock cars and formula cars. Coleman had 8 top-five finishes, with 3 poles and 1 win in 9 starts. Coleman made his Busch Series debut in the same week as he graduated from high school on June 10th. Coleman won 17 races for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2007. Aric Almirola, Kevin Conway, and Tony Stewart as the remainder of the NASCAR Busch Series. He had three top-five finishes, 5 top ten finishes, 7 top 10 finished, and 9 top 20 finishes in only 14 races, including back to back top 5 finishes at Milwaukee and Kentucky and another top 5 finish at Watkins Glen.
Coleman will leave Joe Gibbs Racing after the 2007 season, as it was revealed in October 2007. He signed with Baker Curb to drive the No. 1 in the No. 81. 27 Kleenex Ford Fusion full time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2008, and it was later revealed that he had signed with Hall of Fame Racing as well, with ambitions of running a part-time schedule in 2008 and a full-time run in 2009. In the No. 2400, he made his Sprint Cup Series debut. J. J. Yeley, the current driver, was allowed to drive 96 Toyota Camry at the 3M Performance 400 on August 17, 2008. Coleman left Baker Curb Racing as a result of his latest Sprint Cup experience. However, Hall of Fame Racing had him out early in his career after just one start. Coleman returned to the Nationwide Series for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2009. He posted the No. Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin rode 8 races in a 20 Toyota with Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. He flies back to Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 107 in 2010. 18 Toyota, the car he drove in 2007 and shared the ride with Kyle Busch. Coleman ran six races in the year, with a best finish of 6th, twice. He and teammate Joey Logano competed at Kentucky's outside front row. He was running in the top-ten at Gateway until being involved in a fire with teammate Matt DiBenedetto. He was leading inside of ten laps to go, but Brad Keselowski pulled him off the track on a late start, but he remained to finish sixth.
