The city of Providence, Rhode Island, has allocated $10 million in reparations for black and indigenous peoples, but the step has sparked backlash because some white residents will also be eligible to apply. Mayor Jorge Elorza signed the bill into law in November to fund some of the city's poor and Native American groups, who will be eligible for some of the city's coveted programs. According to the Washington Post, the federal funds can't be earmarked for specific ethnic groups, white residents, who account for less than a third of the city's population, can also apply as long as they make less than $100,000 per year, live in such communities, and have lived in the state for at least three years.
