This is Gareth Southgate's last roll of the dice. It is a big gamble but it could liberate England, writes OLIVER HOLT

OLIVER HOLT: There is a picture taken after England's first match of the 1990 World Cup that shows Bobby Robson, deep in thought, gazing out from a balcony at the team hotel in Sardinia after his side had stumbled to a 1-1 draw in their opening game against the Republic of Ireland. Robson and the players were deluged with criticism after the Ireland game. Some newspapers fell back on the familiar demand of that time that we should 'Bring them home' because they were so dismayed by the result. Robson decided to make changes. Some said there was a player revolt and that they demanded he switch the formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2. Robson said those claims belonged 'in the realms of fiction' but after consulting Gary Lineker, Bryan Robson and Terry Butcher, Robson acted.

England fans on social media have claimed they want Germany to win as Scotland fans regularly support 'anyone but England'. One fan, Mark, wrote: 'I hope Scotland get mullered by the Germans. Every single Scot I've ever met online has been a vapid ginger troll who wants England to lose, so tomorrow for one night only - C'mon Germany.'
SPORTS AGENDA: National League more than doubles its solidarity payment from the Premier League... and fans in the USA lead the way for buying Euro 2024 tickets on secondary markets
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 9, 2024
MIKE KEEGAN: The National League has more than doubled its solidarity payment from the Premier League. Thanks in part to a new competition that will see youngsters from top-flight clubs' academies take on National League sides, the figure will shift from £3m to north of £6m when the new campaign kicks off. Focus for the National League will now switch to the EFL, and the ongoing attempts to secure a system of three-up, three-down from League Two which would put it in synch with the other leagues and replace the ludicrous current situation where only two clubs can be promoted. Tickets on secondary markets for the European Championship have been sold in 134 countries - with a surprise at the top of the list of demand. Fans in the United States have snapped up 27 per cent of all sales, which is more than the 25 per cent of host nation Germany. Fans in Canada are in third place, ahead of Netherlands and Georgia, according to viagogo. The UK is in eighth place, behind Austria and Mexico with the most popular fixture Spain versus Italy. No England games feature in the top 10, although that may well change should the Three Lions progress to the knockout stages.
According to NATHAN SALT, England will miss out on seeing Brazil's iconic yellow jersey at Wembley Stadium, a not-so-subtle marketing tactic that reveals nostalgia is losing the battle against commercialization

Alessandro del Piero, an eight-year-old boy who was glued to his television set, had just seen Italy win the 1982 World Cup, but it was also another country, specifically another color, with another name. The United States may have won the World Cup in 1982, but Brazil captured everyone's imagination,' the former Juventus star said. Those yellow shirts were exotic as a youth, and the football they played was thuggling.' I've always felt a connection to them, and they are right to my heart.'
TOM UTLEY: When nature calls her shrieks, nature does not shriek, but the pleasures of a subtle alfresco pee should be enjoyed by all!

Don't tell Mrs. Butten, I ooften robbed the garden after she's gone to bed, and I can relieve myself behind her lovingly tended shrubs in a corner where no one can see me. Well, it doesn't appear that doing her plants any harm does. I've also been known to nip off behind a tree on the common if the call of nature becomes too overwhelming to ignore when walking the dog, but I must admit that I go to great pains (often literally) to find a spot in the woods where there are no witnesses. I'd be mortified if anyone recognized me. My explanation is that I have prostate problems like so many men of a certain age - the King comes to mind. This means I can no longer boast myself on my cast-iron bladder, as I did in my youth, when I could drink a beer without ever needing the gents.
IAN HERBERT: Barton is the naughty child in the corner, so you will need to swat one. He's a laughing stock and a bully, not the working class philosopher he wants to be. Are you sure you're OK, Joey?
www.dailymail.co.uk,

IAN HERBERT: It's been tempting to ask, 'Are you OK, Joey?' These past weeks, an individual who has two Championship medals, one England substitute appearance, and a 38 percent win rate as Bristol Rovers manager has a curious sense of his own importance.
After winning the European Championships for the fourth time, England's class of 1984 tells Young Lions to'step up'
www.dailymail.co.uk,

JOE BERNSTEIN: The next challenge for this generation of England Under-21 is to imitate those 1984 European Championship champions who were establishing full internationals. Bobby Robson took five members of Dave Sexton's team, who lost 3-0 on aggregate in the two-legged final, and moved to Mexico for the 1986 World Cup.
Gordon McQueen embodied the Scottish centre-half, it was stirring to see him in full flight

HUGH MACDONALD: Scottish junior football once whistled down a South Wales colliery for a Welsh fly half or knocked down a Yorkshire mine shaft for an English fast bowler, Scottish junior footballer David Beckham's called down. Scottish junior football once had a conveyor belt carrying strapping centre-halves to the elite game, but this was not the same as selectors had whistled down a Yorkshire mine shaft for an English fast bowler or called down a Gordon McQueen, who died at the age of 70, was one of the most illustrious of this breed. McQueen, who stood 6 foot 3in with his muscular frame topped by a mop of blond hair, was a striking presence at the forefront of defence for Leeds United, Manchester United, and Scotland's national team. His death, which suffered with dementia in his latter years, will only fuel the discussion about football and the disease. Hayley, the television host, is an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society's Sport United Against Dementia campaign, which aims to raise money for dementia research and supports studies into any correlations between sport and dementia.

The YouTuber, 'Jarvo', was intercepted by eagle-eyed Manchester security forces ahead of their Champions League semi-final victory over Real Madrid last week.

Terry Matson was in Mexico for Diego Maradonna's 'Hand of God' goal and Italy for England's infamous penalty shoot-out against Germany. He was given a ticket to Spain for his 21st birthday and his first two tournaments since. His obsession with football has now taken him to Qatar. Mr Matson is seen above left with Cameroon fans in Qatar, enjoying a beer in Mexico in 1986 top right and meeting Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o (second left) in Brazil during the World Cup. Kent's 61-year-old bricklayer has been to the stadium with his son, where he has met other fans from previous tournaments and cheered on England as they defeated Iran. Terry said that the alcohol stadium ban had not dampened his enjoyment of the tournament right before England's boredom with the United States. "We discovered a location in the city centre where the games are being shown on a big screen," he said. You're paying for the top, but we're in comfort. 'Everywhere is air conditioned.' In the stadiums, the air is felt around the back of your legs.'

Infiltrating Millwall's Bushwacker 'firm' before Italia 90, undercover cop James Bannon recalls being involved
www.dailymail.co.uk,
November 7, 2022
During the most brutal clashes with West Ham in the late 1980s, James Bannon (left and inset as his alias) 52, spent months infiltrating hooligan groups affiliated with Millwall in South London. With a violent minority organising into a 'firm' called the Bushwackers, the club's supporters were one of the most popular in English football at the time. Fans of fan violence had dominated English football in the 1980s, prompting Margaret Thatcher's then government to introduce law enforcement crackdowns. Hooligans were blamed for the 1985 Heysel stadium tragedy, which killed 39 people, and English clubs were barred from European competition for five years. Now, a new Channel 4 documentary explores the hooliganism epidemic that police officers struggled with in the run-up to Italia 90, when England reached the semi-finals under famous boss Bobby Robson. Mr Bannon of Italia 90: "When Football Changed Forever" talks about how he was a "convincing football hooligan" in the hopes of preventing the worst offenders from traveling to Italy for the World Cup. On one occasion, he had to watch a hooligan beating a blameless Crystal Palace fan on a train in front of his wife and children, but he refused to interfere because 'we didn't have don't and broken cover, we'd be f***ed.' Fans of Millwall in 1985 were seen in an alteration with Luton Town supporters (top right); England supporters at Italia 1990.
Louis van Gaal's last dance!A look back at the Holland manager's career ahead of the World Cup
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 5, 2022
Louis van Gaal has seen most things in football, but after being forced to bow out of retirement for one last shot at glory with Holland, he now has the opportunity to finish his glittering managerial career with the ultimate triumph. The Dutchman is now in his third term as the head of the national team, having previously ruled Holland from 2000-2001 to 2012-2014. This winter's World Cup in Qatar looks to be Van Gaal's last dance, at 71 and after recently fighting an aggressive form of prostate cancer. No one would begrudge him for lowering the trophy.
Lothar Matthaus and his mate Diego Maradona are exchanging a bag of cash to Napoli, and they're off to Napoli

BY CRAIG HOPE: Lothar Matthaus may have excelled on his friendship with Diego Maradona on two occasions. In a Munich restaurant, the first time involved a bag bursting with Deutsche marks beneath a table. The second, just a few weeks back, was worried about the jersey worn by the late Argentina legend in the Mexico '86 World Cup final, in which Matthaus and West Germany were defeated 3-2.
Brighton's much-admired transfer dealings are discussed by Graham Potter
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 17, 2022
Brighton manager Graham Potter (right) regards being linked with the England job as "an incredible honor," but has denied any immediate suggestion that he might be Gareth Southgate's (inset) potential replacement. Potter's captivating style of football, realistic vision of football, and hard-fought victories at Brighton have long portrayed him as the best national job, with some fans believing he is the one to guide England to long-awaited glory.
