Robert William Weiss (born May 7, 1942) is an American professional basketball coach and former professional basketball player and coach.
College career
Weiss played basketball at Penn State University from 1963 to 1965, averaging of 16.3 points per game during his senior season.
Professional career
In the 1965 NBA Draft, Weiss was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers. Weiss played for the Wilmington Blue Bombers for a brief period of his time with the 76ers in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. In the 1966–67 season, he was one of the EBL's most active contributors and was named to the EBL All-Star First Team.
Weiss was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967 NBA Expansion Draft, and he was a member of the 76ers' 1967 championship team. Weiss has played in the NBA for ten years, including six with the Chicago Bulls.
Coaching career
Weiss briefly worked with an investment company in Anaheim, California, after retiring as an actor in 1977. He joined the San Diego Clippers as an assistant coach in 1978. He made his way to the Dallas Mavericks, an expansion franchise in 1980.
Weiss accepted his first head coaching job with the San Antonio Spurs in 1986 after six years in Dallas. He coached the Spurs for two seasons, but never had a winning record. He did, however, lead them to the playoffs in 1988.
Weiss was named head coach by the Orlando Magic after a year as an Orlando Magic assistant. His Hawks teams won 124-122 and twice made the playoffs.
In 1993, Weiss left the Hawks. He spent one year as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers before joining the SuperSonics as an assistant coach. He was in that position for a year under both George Karl and Nate McMillan, who both appeared in the NBA Finals in 1996. After McMillan left for the Portland Trail Blazers, he was promoted to head coach in 2005. However, Weiss did not live long enough for one season as the Sonics struggled to a losing record. His three-year deal was ended on January 3, 2006, with Bob Hill replacing him after a 13-17 start to the 2005–06 season.
Weiss went to China in 2008 to coach the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons in the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons. He has also worked with the Shandong Lions.
Weiss joined the Atlanta Hawks' coaching staff in 2012. He became an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats next year. He was hired by the Denver Nuggets as an assistant coach in 2017.
