Goodbye to a tennis Galactico... legend Rafa Nadal's decision to retire brings to an end a glorious era
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 10, 2024
Rafa Nadal will walk off into the sunset as a bona fide Galactico of the tennis world, a key part of a quartet who shaped the greatest era in the history of the game. Rafa, Roger, Novak, Andy; four players who, between them, smashed every record in the book and pushed each other to new heights during a truly golden age for men's tennis. Only Djokovic remains. Given his remarkable powers of endurance, it remains eminently possible that the 37-year-old Serb could further extend his record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
New jewels please: How the royals have stolen the show at Wimbledon with their sparkler choices - from Princess Margaret's diamond brooch to Kate's gold charm earrings

In 1965, Princess Margaret (main) was spotted in the royal box at Wimbledon with sunglasses on, cigarette in hand and a fabulous diamond brooch pinned to her shoulder. In 1977, when her sister he Queen (bottom right) presented the winner's trophy to women's singles victor Virginia Wade, Her Late Majesty wore a pair of large pearl earrings. On her pink and white checked coat, she wore the Duchess of Cambridge's Brooch, which had belonged to her great-great-grandmother Princess Augusta. In 2016, Kate Middleton looked to Scotland and a firm traditionally known for cashmere to provide her jewels when she watched Scot Andy Murray win his second Wimbledon title. She chose gold charm earrings and twinned them with gold-plated brass hoops.
Kilts are back, but don't dare call it a skirt
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Andrea Chappell wears a kilt almost every day, but she won't disclose how many she owns. 'Oh, god,' she says. 'No, I won't admit to that! The number is usually smaller than I need, but it's likely that more than I need are the same as mine, but that more than my husband knows I have.'

OLIVER HOLT: Andy Murray is the kind of player you'd like to have as a hero... I don't want to let him go
www.dailymail.co.uk,
January 15, 2024
OLIVER HOLT: Maybe you don't remember it was before, but it was before. Perhaps you don't recall how Roger Taylor offered to repeat a point against a 17-year-old Bjorn Borg in a Wimbledon quarter-final and became a byword for outstanding sportsmanship. You may not recall when Buster Mottram was the British No. 1 and was more popular for being a National Front sympathiser than it was for him to play tennis. Maybe you don't remember when Jeremy Bates was our leading light, and it was a triumph if he made it to the second week of Wimbledon. I recall recall reading in the 90s that Bates drove a Porsche and wondering how it could be that such a lowly player would be so richly rewarded. I may not have known then that to be the world No. 54 on Bates' top ranked list, you would be in a very unusual firm.
OLIVER HOLT: Ludvig Aberg, Europe's rising star, is no bigger than Abba, Bjorn Borg, or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the youngster is poised to face them in the Ryder Cup for his second attempt at greatness
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 26, 2023
OLIVER HOLT: On Tuesday, the second of the Great Ones walked into the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club media marquee. It's been around for a long time. Everybody knows him. Everybody who has seen him play knows he is a fan. Anybody who has watched him strike a ball and heard the way it sounds when it flies away from his club. It's often the best, with the special guests. People know that even before they have started their professional careers in earnest, they are still learning. When LeBron James was still a boy in high school, it was just the way he was. Venus Williams was the way to go. After Everton games, Wayne Rooney was still playing football in the streets with his mates. And it was just like that with Tiger Woods when he was still a student.
COURT REPORT: Roofs save the day for the thankful All England Club

MATTHEW LAMBERT AT WIMBLEDON: It was one of those days when the All England Club would have been thanking their lucky stars for the roofs on Centre and Court No. 1. On Friday, there was not a single ball struck outside the courthouse, and in a bygone era that may have culminated in the men's final being postponed until Monday.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 on Saturday, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 for his two-day epic against Andy Murray and into the final 16. How Bjorn Borg stormed Wimbledon 50 years ago in tennis's Beatles moment

The long blond hair of JAMES SHARPE. The headband is the headband. That two-handed backhand. The hordes of terrified teenage girls of Sweden were eager to break through the police escorts to point the finger at the handsome 17-year-old Ice Man. This summer, Borgmania debuted at Wimbledon and changed tennis for the first time. Bjorn Borg made his Wimbledon debut in 1973. It was his first year on the professional tour. "He was a celebrity before he ever won a match," Martina Navratilova said on the BBC documentary Gods of Tennis: He was a hero before he ever won a match.'
According to an ex-Wimbledon referee, men should qualify for the quarter-finals of Grand Slams

MATCH POINT: Most people tread closely on the subject of gender parity in tennis, but that hasn't stopped one-time Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett from venting into the minefield. The man with the walkie-talkie on Centre Court has a few recommendations, which he discusses in the book in which he was stuck in Australia during lockout. Jartt, who oversaw the running of the grass-court Grand Slam from 2006-2009, has penned Championship Points, a book in which he takes the reader on a thrilling journey through a diverse career in which he has portrayed himself as both a player, coach, and high-ranking official.
Harry will do well to watch this portrait of the Queen's remarkable life: ROLAND WHITE reviews television
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 12, 2023
ROLAND WHITE: Are they secret monarchists at Channel 4? You wouldn't expect so from the station's cheeky 'alternative' Christmas greeting or last month's alternative coronation coverage. However, Elizabeth Through A Lens (Ch4), the Red Arrows' television equivalent of bunting, street parties, and a fly-past, was on display last night. An interview with Paddington Bear was all that was missing. This was supposed to be about the late Queen's relationship with the camera lens in theory. 'Elizabeth II was without question the most photographed and well-filmed woman that ever lived,' one expert said.
We Will Rock You, Patriot MARMION addresses Queen's musical, We Will Rock You
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 8, 2023
Not even the sight of Ben Elton in a cheesy Borg wig and headband was enough to save the Queen tribute performance, which had to be postponed for 12 weeks last night. Well, it has been on the lottery for 12 years since its humble beginning in 2002 before going global. Well, Queen guitarist Brian May provided an electric solo accompanying Bohemian Rhapsody at the end. However, with tickets selling for about £100 a head and heading north to a whopping £150, theatre-goers can well afford more, especially at a cost of nearly three hours of their time. Editing, on the other hand, has never been a strong suit for Elton, a former motormouth actor, prolific Blackadder TV script writer, and author of 17 novels. We're immersed in a sometimes incomprehensible post-apocalypse schlock rock saga set in the sci-fi future, in which all music is strictly controlled by the 'Global-Soft' company, and yet everyone, virtually everywhere, bursts into song.

Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, 32, the disgraced tennis legend, 55, was seen on Tuesday on the island of Ibiza with his girlfriend Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, 32. In the parking lot of a restaurant on the party island, the pair were photographed getting out of a modest Dacia Lodgy, which was ostensibly a hire car. Lilian was stranded by Becker after being sentenced to two years and a half for concealing £2.5 million in order to avoid paying his bills in April 2022.
The life of the hooker who murdered the Earl of Shaftesbury will be chronicled in a documentary
www.dailymail.co.uk,
March 10, 2023
Scrolling through the 61-year-old Dowager Countess of Shaftesbury's social media posts, you would never have guessed that this was a woman who paid for her husband's (right, the tenth Earl of Shaftesbury) to be murdered and left his body to be mauled by wild animals. Not for this former escort and Playboy model, but rather for one's quiet atonement for their sins. Despite her involvement in the murder of the husband from whom she derived the term, Jamila Ben M'Barek, as she was born, has a Facebook page announcing the French word for Countess. The name 'Jam_Borgia' appears on several of her Instagram profiles. There is no explanation as to why she picked the surname of one of history's most violent families, but below it are articles implying that 'life is fine' for Ben M'Barek, who was released from jail in 2016.'

Tiafoes of France wins the first Laver Cup for Team World in a historic way
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 25, 2022
Roger Federer was never the competitor, admitting that his Team Europe's surprise loss at the Laver Cup had been a sting in the tail right up to the end. I don't like losing, but it doesn't make it exciting, it leaves a bad impression,' the Swiss legend said after a 13-8 defeat that saw his team lose this tournament for the first time in five editions. Federer will return shortly enough, and it is likely that in some capacity at next year's festival in Vancouver will be present. He denied that there are any immediate plans to take over as Europe captain, and Bjorn Borg said he will stay in the role for a year before stepping down.

They returned to Centre Court after being seated 25-year-old five times as a result of McEnroe's 1981 appearance.

Bjorn Borg, Team Europe's captain, has granted the 20-time grand slam champion his wishes, and he and Nadal, a 22-time major winner, will face Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World at about 9 p.m. on Friday.

Former tennis greats have a LOT of glamorous relatives

Anna Ermakova, Boris Becker's model, was seen frolicking in Monaco this week, but she is not the only relative of a former tennis great who is living the high life. The offspring of Eighties and Nineties heroes, including Ivan Lendl (centre), Jimmy Connors, and Noah Noah, all live glamorous lives that rival their thousands of social media followers. Emily (right), 31, of John McEnroe, is following in the footsteps of her actress mother Tatum O'Neal and pursuing a career in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Talia Graf (left), the niece of German-born player Steffi Graf, is making a name for herself in the fashion industry.
