Bill Kreutzmann Life

William Kreutzmann Jr. (KROYTS-mahn; born May 7, 1946) is an American drummer.

He was with the Grateful Dead for nearly 30 years, most with fellow drummer Mickey Hart, and has continued to perform with former members of the Grateful Dead in various lineups, as well as with his own bands BK3, 7 Walkers, and Billy & the Kids.

Early life

Kreutzmann was born in Palo Alto, California, as the son of Janice Beryl (née Shaughnessy) and William Kreutzmann Sr. of German descent. Clark Shaughnessy, his maternal grandfather, was a football coach and entrepreneur.

Kreutzmann began playing drums at the age of 13. He trained on a Slingerland drum kit, which was lent to him at first. Aldous Huxley and another man stepped in as a student in a massive building at his high school. Despite the fact that Bill was told by his sixth grade music teacher that he could not keep a beat, Huxley told Bill that he'd never heard anything like it and encouraged him in his drumming. Kreutzmann continued to do a good job. Ray Charles and other R&B musicians piqued his interest in music from his childhood. He has claimed that Mickey Hart learned some advanced technique or tricks later.

When Kreutzmann discovered an opportunity for an under-age man to join jazz groups in clubs, he listened to jazz groups in clubs. bassist Phil Lesh introduced him the career of Elvin Jones, one of the finest jazz drummers of the day, after joining the Warlocks (later called the Grateful Dead). Kreutzmann became a fan of The Meters' funk music.
