News about Benny Hill

TOM UTLEY: John Torode. Gregg Wallace. Wynne Evans. How long until my pub chums and I are the next chaps of a certain vintage to be hauled before the court of political correctness?

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 17, 2024
TOM UTLEY: Spare a thought for famous men of a certain age who find themselves totally at sea in the woke modern world. One after another over recent days, those brought up in the era of Benny Hill, the Carry On films and Till Death Us Do Part have fallen foul of today's fashionable rules governing acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. Take John Torode (left), 59, the MasterChef presenter, who has been tried and convicted in the court of social media for cracking a puerile joke while he was plating up toad in the hole on Tuesday's edition of the ITV breakfast show, This Morning. Those of a sensitive disposition are advised to turn the page now, because I'm about to repeat it verbatim.

The 53-year-old former Gogglebox star's conduct on the E4 dating show has been widely criticised after one of his date's branded his behaviour 'creepy' and inappropriate'. However, in a new interview, Stephen has now spoken out against the negative reception he's received, noting that his dating game is 'rusty' while suggesting that younger viewers don't get his old school 70s humour.

Paul Whitehouse's Sketch Show Years review: Bravo Paul, for daring to remind us of Benny Hill's joyful slapstick, writes CHRISTOPHER STEVENS

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 27, 2024
Only a comedy connoisseur would have the nerve. Paul Whitehouse, star of The Fast Show and now Gone Fishing, dared to say it - Benny Hill was brilliantly funny. In the first episode of his Sketch Show Years, harking back to the 1970s, he paid tribute to beloved double acts: Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Acknowledged geniuses such as Les Dawson and the Python troupe were included too, though the selection was too predictable - the dead parrot, conductor Andrew Preview, fork handles and Bloody Greta Garbo all featured. But the real fun started when Paul dared to reassess the comedians that political correctness cancelled. He took a nostalgic joy in reminding us of Dick Emery's favourite characters - Honky-Tonks mincing in his silks and extravagant hats, and saucy Mandy dispatching every suitor with a shove: 'Ooh, you are awful . . . but I like you!'

Boomers are sexist bigots. Gen X have let down their children. Millennials are constantly moaning. What Gen Z REALLY thinks about you - and what the rest of us think about them

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 30, 2024
With their different perspectives, old and young have always disagreed on things. Today, though, the generational divide seems more toxic than ever - with technology and so-called ' woke culture' driving a deepening wedge between the age groups. Baby Boomers (those born roughly between 1946 and 1964) slate Gen Z (born after 1996) for being self-centred, rude and downright lazy; Gen Z call out the sexism of their grandparents' generation. Meanwhile Gen X (born between 1965 and 1979) lambast 'snowflake' Millennials (born between 1980 and 1996), who are universally derided for their sense of entitlement and lack of direction. But who is right? Here, the four generations go head to head...

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 8, 2024
This is the thrilling moment when a police motorcycle collided into a fleeing criminal's scooter before the cop chased him on foot through a McDonald's drive-thru. On Eltham Road in south-east London, a video shows how the vehicle failed to stop after being flagged down by the officer for reportedly driving with no registration plates. The officer's motorcycle sped into the scooter, causing the officer's pursuit to take an unexpected turn. The officer then pursued the mped driver on foot in a chase that culminated in the pair running around a McDonald's drive-thru.

How Sadiq Khan's globetrotting Night Tsar Amy Lamé enjoyed trips to the United States, India, Australia, and Ukraine since being booted from stand-up, a sex-themed TV game show, and a 'lesbian Benny Hill' film were among Sadiq Khan's 'best jobs in the world' in 2016

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 26, 2024
Amy Lamé, an American-born 'glamour puss with a penchant for 1950s styles,' was making a reported £50 a day as Danny Baker's sidekick on BBC London. Amy also performed well in one-woman shows, including Gay Man Trapped in a Lesbian's Body and establishing the raucous and eclectic Duckie at the Vauxhall Tavern, one of the country's longest-running LGBTQ+ club nights, where acts included a stripping dwarf. She admits that her work has been varied, and she has even been portrayed as appearing in a 1995 Lesbian film titled as a 'wacky British sex romp in the Benny Hill tradition (minus the misogyny).' Sadiq Khan, who was unveiled as a Labour MP in 2016, has taken the job of being London's first-ever Night Tsar after she promised to stop the flow of venue closures in the capital. She is now in a six-figure salary career and still believes the Mayor of London, who refers to her as her 'Mate,' has given her the 'best job in the world'. Her salary has increased from just over £80,000 to £116,925 today, in a short period of time. However, 1,100 bars and clubs have closed down in the capital in just three years, with more than 100 in the last three years. MailOnline is reporting today that the comedian, writer, and broadcaster has attended at least 12 international jaunts as part of her Night Tsar job since 2017, with a significant gap due to the pandemic. Trips to 'build partnerships,' study nightlife, and attend conferences have taken her to Mumbai, Melbourne and Sydney, Boston, Bologna, Berlin and Paris, as well as Tallinn and even Lviv in Ukraine.

QUENTIN LETTS: Don't let the tide go out on bath time! Churchill's tub dictated sermons. Norman Lamont performed in his. Showers are now on the rage as a result of high energy prices

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 27, 2023
QUENTIN LETTS: Nothing beats a bath, or at least I did until yesterday's Mail delivered troubling news. Baths are out of fashion, according to reports. You could say that the tide is going out on them. The headline read, "We're going to plug baths to reduce our electricity bills." Jonathan Myers, a heating water specialist, explained that the cost of heating water for a bath had resulted in a change in the country's daily life. 'People are taking fewer baths and avoiding those high electricity bills, and taking more showers,' he said.

CRAIG BROWN: Why it's vive la difference with France!

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 18, 2023
CRAIG BROWN: Jane Birkin, the super trendy actress and singer, died in Paris at the age of 76. 'Because she represented liberty,' said French President Emmanuel Macron, "because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.' Jane Birkin was English, born in London and educated on the Isle of Wight, and he seemed to forget that she was from England. However, he may have been forgiven. After all, don't most things stylish come from France, while Britain lags behind? Jane Birkin is one of them. We have Joan Collins. Serge Gainsbourg appears on the show. We have Benny Hill. Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus. We have Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) to blame.

How to Survive Life's Second Act... admitting that you can't have it all

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 8, 2023
LORRAINE CANDY: Many of us are ambushed by the sudden disappearance of our mojo as we enter our mid-40s. We stand in front of the mirror and wonder what we're looking at. Well, now that I'm 54 and feel as though I'm just about done with this baffling, I have good news: this unraveling is temporary. Gen X has simply arrived in the tumultuous middle of the game and needs assistance in navigating it both physically and mentally.

IAN HERBERT: Amid sound and fury of modern football, what joy Saint and Greavsie is back!

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2023
DEPUTY SPORTS WRITER IAN HERBERT: The news appeared like a sliver of blue sky on a cloudy day. Saint and Greavsie (right) has returned amid the chaos, commotion, and self-aggrandisement that has increasingly consumed football. On ITV4, ITV4 will feature six compilation episodes of their best bits this summer, as well as a catch-up on ITVX. Because not everyone will be interested in Greavsie's discussion of Scottish goalkeepers, Hamilton Academic, referees, or the Swedish Viking hat he wore on the last episode in the 1980s, judicious editing will doubtless be useful. Now there is more sensitive. However, the legendary Aztec Gold theme tune, which was first used by ITV for the Mexico'86 World Cup, will return to the United States, where we will revisit one of the most exciting, most innovative, and stunning football programs ever seen.

Marianne Jones never imagined going to a West Africa for an all-inclusive holiday

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 5, 2023
My experience is interesting as I meander through one of our hotel's four swimming ponds, balancing soft drinks in plastic cups. Any of the 30 or so elderly holidaymakers in front of me are frantically trying to keep up with a water Zumba class. The music is pounding, the bar next door is throbbing, and pale skin is sizzling under the African sun. And it's just 10 a.m.

Do YOU know your Adam and Eve from your Ruby Murray? Take the Cockney Slang quiz to see how you do

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 4, 2023
Market traders, costermongers, and street hawkers all invented the Cockney rhyming slang in London's East End in the 1840s. It's either accidental or deliberately developed, to this day, it's unclear if or not the words came about as a result of a linguistic accident or deliberate. Rhyming slang is used to obscure sentences with the first word of a term that rhymes with the word. Cockney words have made their way into the English wordbook, as many are still used in London and others around Britain centuries since they were first invented.

How Benny Hill is now a huge hit in Spain - despite sad demise of comedy genius

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 28, 2023
Benny Hill, a national treasure, held an eponymous exhibition from 1955 to 1989. This week, it was announced that the late actor is enjoying a revival in Spain, with a 2,000 word feature in a glossy supplement in El Pais attracting a lot of attention as young Spaniards watch repeats of his show on Youtube. But despite his continuing fame, Hill suffered a sad decline later in his life and was accused of sexual assault decades after his death in 1992, when his body was discovered in his rented apartment surrounded by filthy crockery and garbage. A scene from his show in 1983; Hill with two 'Benny Girls in 1984 (top right); the actor left hospital in 1992, months before his death.

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 13, 2022

Boris bids bye-bye: Bacon butties for breakfast, Carrie's farewell in fuchsia and moment Liz met Liz

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 7, 2022
The day of political drama was matched every step of the way by the ever-changing British weather. Boris Johnson's farewell address in Downing Street had to be postponed an hour to 7.30 a.m. due to a storm warning. There were 'inedible' bacon sandwiches and cups of 'grey-looking' tea in No. 10's final minutes, but the energy was upbeat. The scene was described as jolly when Mr Johnson's inner circle gathered for the last time, with the smiling PM agreeing to souvenir selfies with his loyalists.

Bill Turnbull's best moments as the presenter dies aged 66

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 1, 2022
Bill Turnbull, the TV host and journalist, died aged 66 after a 'challenging and vain fight against prostate cancer,' his family reported today. Following his cancer diagnosis in November 2017, the former BBC Breakfast presenter died 'peacefully' at home in Suffolk yesterday, according to his family. Turnbull, who appeared on the programme from 2001 to 2016, revealed he was suffering from the illness in March 2018 and detailed his treatment in a Channel 4 documentary called Staying Alive. In October last year, he announced that he was taking a leave of absence from his show on Classic FM for health reasons. He served from the front line of British and international politics, as well as hosting a number of lighter gameshows and religious programs throughout his four-decade career. The nation had awakened to Turnbull's calm, reassuring demeanor, as well as some heartwarming and amusing scenes during his 15 years on the BBC morning show.
