Early life
William Knox Holt's four brothers and eleven siblings, as well as Eliza Jane Virgin's children, and later Harriet Parker Ames of Concord, New Hampshire, were among the youngest of four brothers and eleven siblings. William Knox Holt owned a sawmill that made hardwood for wagon and coach building. Benjamin's brother Charles H. Holt arrived in San Francisco, California, where he established C. H. Holt and Co. The company made wooden wagon wheels and then steel streetcar wheels, which were later added to wagons. In 1871, brothers William Harrison Holt and Ames Frank Holt appeared together. Primarily manufacturing wagon axles, wheels, and frames, the company exported hardwood, lumber, wagon, and carriage parts. The brothers moved hardwood from New Hampshire by sea to San Francisco.
Benjamin Benjamin's father's sawmill in 1869, and he was preparing hardwoods for shipping to his brothers in San Francisco.
