Batty Fischer Life

Jean-Baptiste (British) Fischer (1877-1981) was a Luxembourg dentist and amateur photographer.

He is best known for his series of 10,000 photographs that vividly document Luxembourg City's growth from the 19th century to the 1950s.

Early life and family

Batty Fischer was born in Marché aux Herbes, right next to the Grand Ducal palace, where his parents, Josef Fischer and Marguerite Marie Ferron, had a shop that sold fashionable clothing and furs. Batty was the eldest of three children; Marguerite and brother Fritz would take over the family business later. Fischer studied dentistry at Ecole Dentaire in Paris after graduating from high school.
