The Oscar-winning film that wouldn't get made today despite being hailed 'beautiful' by critics

He may have retired seven years ago - but Daniel Day Lewis (left) remains one of the world's most famous and widely respected actors. Over the course of his forty year career, the British legend, 67, has appeared in blockbuster hits including Gangs of New York, The Last of the Mohicans and There Will Be Blood. In 1990, the father-of-three - who has stepped out of retirement to appear in his son's new film - bagged his first Oscar for the fairly low-budget biographical movie (top and bottom right). But while this casting decision may have been a no-brainer at the time, the fact that Daniel is an able-bodied man who is the son of a former Poet Laureate might have impacted whether he got the role by today's standards. Inset: the Irish painter and writer who inspired the film.
I grew up in Imane Khelif's village and her family are stunned by gender row - this is why she has the right to fight as a woman: Algerian boxer's TV anchor pal launches passionate defence of 'heroic' star after 46-second bout with Angela Carini

Algeria's top TV news anchor Youcef Zaghba, who grew up in the same village as controversial Algerian female boxer Imane Khelif and watched her career develop, has made a passionate defence of his friend's right to fight as a woman, as the international campaign against her gathers momentum.
Celebrities including author JK Rowling and former boxer Barry McGuigan have questioned Imane's participation in the Paris Olympics after her Italian opponent Angela Carini dramatically withdrew from their fight after just 46 seconds.
Algerian media has since mounted a steadfast defence of her and homegrown stars such as former Man City star Riyad Mahrez have also given Khelif their backing. Revealing how Imane's family - who have not travelled to Paris - were left stunned by the criticism of their daughter and he also gave his unwavering and passionate support, Mr Zaghba writes exclusively here for MailOnline.
Father of Paris Olympics gender row boxer Imane Khelife says attacks on the fighter are 'immoral' and 'unfair' - as fury over Algerian's inclusion in this year's contest rages on

The father of Algerian boxer Imane Khelife says the criticism against his daughter, who sparked a row over her participation in the Paris Olympics after failing a testosterone test, is 'immoral'. Khelife has made headlines around the world and become one of the most talked-about competitors after her female opponent Angela Carini quit just 46 seconds into their bout at this summer's Games. Now Amar Khelife has rounded on the critics and said the controversy is part of 'a ploy' to stop his daughter winning a medal at the Olympics.
We will witness legalised murder in the ring if this insane wokery is allowed to continue, writes boxing legend JEFF POWELL

Yesterday's fight between Italy's Angela Carini and Algerian Imane Khelif is a red flag as huge as that Chinese banner unfurled the other day at the gymnastics arena. It's a warning as to what will inevitably happen should this insane piece of wokery be allowed to continue. If male-bodied boxers continue to take on women in the ring, I predict that we will witness legalised murder in the name of sport.
Inside the tough childhood of 'biologically male' boxer Imane Khelif whose 46-second demolition of female rival sparked fury: How she sold bread on the street for cash and was told the sport was 'only for men' but wanted to 'show what I brave woman I am'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 2, 2024
Olympic women's boxer Imane Khelif, who triggered an international gender row by demolishing her opponent in 46 seconds yesterday, has spoken of her 'bravery' at overcoming a life of adversity to reach the top of her sport. The 'biologically male' athlete told how she rose from selling bread on the the streets of her Algerian village to become a sporting hero - after a coach turned her to the sport due to her 'physical qualities'. But even then, she faced prejudice as her conservative community viewed the sport as 'only for men'. The 25-year-old, one of two athletes thrown out of last year's world championships in New Delhi after failing to meet gender eligibility criteria, is now eyeing up a dream gold medal after progressing to the quarter-finals in a win marred by controversy. In an unearthed interview filmed ahead of the Games, the boxer opened up about bouncing back from her ban over elevated testosterone levels and declared: 'I wanted to show the whole world what a brave woman Imane Khelif is.'
Imane Khelif being allowed to fight females at the Olympics is 'shocking, dangerous and profoundly unfair on women and girls', says former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan

Former boxing world champion Barry McGuigan has hit out at the International Olympic Committee for allowing Imane Khelif to compete in the women's welterweight (66kg) event at Paris 2024. Algerian boxer Khelif progressed to the quarter-finals on Thursday after her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, abandoned their fight after 46 seconds. Carini later said: 'I had to preserve my life.' There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Khelif's inclusion in the event. She was disqualified from last year's Women's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria due to elevated levels of testosterone. Contrary to widespread rumours online, Khelif is not transgender.

An Italian female boxer who celebrated qualifying for the Olympics in honour of her late father was today defeated by her 'biologically male' opponent. The controversial bout saw Italy 's Angela Carini and her Algerian opponent Imane Khelif in the ring for just 46 seconds before the Italian threw down her helmet, yelling: 'This is unjust'. In resurfaced footage from the Olympic Qualifiers, a determined Carini broke down in tears as she showed an image of her dead father to reporters before saying: 'Until the end I fought with blood in my eyes because I wanted this victory at all costs. Just for my father'. She explained how she told her dad she was tired, and that the training was intense, but promised him she would never give up. Despite her motivation to claim victory during Thursday's bout, however, the 25-year-old ultimately refused the handshake and fell to the canvas sobbing having received just two punches from Khelif - who had been banned from a major boxing contest before the Olympics .

The International Olympic Committee has warned against a 'witch-hunt' amid criticism of a decision to allow two boxers, who were banned for being deemed biologically male, to compete at the Olympics as women. Algeria's Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan were disqualified from the Women's World Boxing Championships in March 2023 in New Delhi. At the time Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association (IBA), claimed the tests had proven the athletes - including Khelif and Yu-Ting - had 'XY chromosomes'.

How Barry McGuigan's son stepped out of the ring and out of his father's shadow

BY CHARLOTTE DALY: When Barry McGuigan turned 63 this week, he was still the stand-alone undisputed No.1 trainer in his family. Not anymore. Shane McGuigan, both son and protégé, won his second British Boxing Board of Control Trainer of the Year title on St Patrick's Day, so it's now 2-2. And you can't assume that it will not be around for long. Of course, Barry is one of the most popular British fighters of all time. A former featherweight world champion and a BBC Sports personality of the year, he cannot walk along a street without being reminded of Loftus Road, Eusebio Pedroza of Panama, and the championship victory in 1985.

When Padraig McCrory clashes with heavy-hitter Edgar Berlanga in Orlando this weekend, he will have a golden opportunity to add to the region's long list of elite fighters. Berlanga has firmly established himself as one of the best punchers in the super middleweight division, with the American winning his first 16 professional bouts by first-round defeat.

Daniel Dubois dismisses doubts that he will be out for six months and promises to return early next year
www.dailymail.co.uk,
December 20, 2022
After suffering an ACL injury during his victory over Kevin Lerena earlier this month, Daniel Dubois has allayed concerns that he will be out for six months. After being knocked down three times by Lerena, the WBA regular champion defended his title on December 3 vehemently. Nonetheless, the British heavyweight managed to score a third-round knockout, but the bout now faces a spell out of the ring. Barry McGuigan, the father of Dubois' trainer Shane, had already announced that the 25-year-old would be out for six months. However, Dubois has since reacted angrily to these articles on social media. He tweeted: '6 months is not right! In early 2023, I will be able to fight in early 2023.
