Early life and education
As he grew up in Belfast, he studied piano, cello, clarinet, and organ. He first learned in Belfast while attending Methodist College Belfast and, later, began lessons with Felicitas LeWinter, a pupil of Emil von Sauer and grand-pupil Franz Liszt. He lived in London for four years and then studied privately with Maria Curcio, the last and favourite pupil of Artur Schnabel, before embarking on Paris to study with Russian pianist Yevgeny Malinin. In 1985, he received the Bronze Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas and second prize in the 1980 Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition in Spain. In 1986, he captured the gold medal outright in the International Tchaikovsky Competition, becoming the first non-Russian pianist to do so after Van Cliburn in 1958.
Career
Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was his debut album. Since then, he has made several recordings since then and has recently completed (with Camerata Ireland) the five Beethoven piano concertos and the Triple Concerto (with Kim Chee-yun and Andrés Daz). He is the Artistic Director of the International Piano Festival in Manchester, England, and the Clandeboye Festival in Bangor, County Down. Elizabeth II and Mary McAleese (the then President of Ireland) are joint Patrons of Camerata Ireland in 1998.
Douglas now devotes a significant portion of his time to conducting the Camerata Ireland orchestra. In November 2002, he conducted cycles of Beethoven's complete symphonies (in November 2002) and the Mozart and Schubert symphonies and Mozart and Schubert concertos in 2000 and 2001. He has recorded for the RCA Victor Red Seal and Satirino France brands.
