Barry Appleby (born 1909 – 11 March 1996) was a British cartoonist best known for creating The Gambols for the Daily Express. * The strip debuted on March 16, 1950. * The script was written by his wife Dobs and was based on their own experiences. E J. Appleby, Appleby's father, was in the 1950s as the editor of a leading British motor magazine and one to which Appleby himself contributed his first illustration in 1931. Appleby later wrote for the magazine edited by his father, using the name "Helix."

On Sunday's Gambols cartoonist Roger Mahoney, who died at the age of 89, paid their respects to The Mail's Roger Mahoney. Readers were entertained by his weekly cartoon strip The Gambols provided a humorous glimpse at life in suburbia. Sandra Mahoney, 57, of Roger's children, said on behalf of the family: 'He was an extraordinary man.' He was already drawing right up to ten days before he died.'
