Career
Levy was born in Clarendon, Jamaica. With his cousin, Everton Dacres, he formed the Mighty Multitude; the pair recorded "My Black Girl" in 1977. Levy began his solo career in 2007 with the release of "A Long Time Since We Don't Have No Love"; although the single was a failure, the fourteen-year-old was a popular performer in Jamaican dancehalls. In a Midnight Raver interview in August 2014, record producer Delroy Wright revealed that it was his brother Hyman Wright who first encountered Barrington Levy in the mid-1970s through Wade "Trinity" Brammer. Before introducing him to Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Deroy Wright recalled a number of tracks with Barrington Levy. These songs will eventually appear on the album Bounty Hunter, which was released on the Jah Life record label. "Al Yah We Deh," "Looking My Love," "Englishman," "Skylarking," "Wedding Ring Aside" and "Collie Weed," three of which became hits and established Levy's career. "Shine Eye Girl," "Wicked Intention," "Jumpy Girl," "Reggae Music," "Never Tear My Love Apart," "Jah," "You Made Me So Happy" and "When You're Young and in Love" were among Levy's next few singles, "When You're Young and in Love" were all hits, including "When You're Young and In Love." Levy performed several duets with Toyan, Jah Thomas, and Trinity, and he appeared at Reggae Sunsplash in 1980 and 1981. Although albums were not particularly popular in Jamaica at the time, Levy released four albums before 1980: Shaolin Temple, Bounty Hunter, Shine Eye Gal (United Kingdom) and Englishman, a critically acclaimed album. His popularity resulted in several earlier studio and sound system performances being reissued without his permission, prompting him to reissue multiple earlier studio and sound system performances, which he characterized as "joke business."
Levy was one of the best Jamaican actors when his album Robin Hood was released in 1980, and his international fame soared as well, particularly in the United Kingdom. Levy made his debut as a producer on the rare 1981 showcase album Run Come Ya, which was released on the Canadian Puff Records label.
"In the Dark," "Too Poor," "I Have a Love," "I Have It," "I Have a Love," "You Have It," "Mate Women," "My Girl" and "Money Move" followed Levy's break from albums, including "Mary Long Tongue," "I Have It," "I Have a Problem," "I Have It," "Too Poor," "I Have It," "I Have It," "Too Poor," "I Have It," "I'si He began working with Paul "Jah Screw" Love and toured the UK in 1984, where he enjoyed a major hit on the reggae charts with "Under Mi Sensi" that was followed by the crossover hit "Here I Come," which debuted at number 41 on the UK Singles Chart in 1985. With Lifestyle and Money Move, he returned to LPs, as well as a British hit song called Here I Come; Levy received the Best Vocalist award at the British Reggae Awards in 1984. Levy's time as a student in the late 1980s saw him decline his output, though he continued to perform and record regularly, and appeared at Sunsplash every year from 1987 to 1995. Two cover versions of Bob Andy's "My Time" and "Too Experienced" were released by Jah Screw, and he was signed by Island Records in 1991 for the Divine album. With "Tribal Base," a single by Rebel MC starring Levy and Tenor Fly, which climbed to number 20 in 1991, he returned to the UK charts in 1991. Levy attempted to break into the United States with the Barrington album, which was produced by Lee Jaffe, Andre Betts, and Sly & Robbie, but it wasn't able to give him the breakthrough he wanted and his relationship with MCA Records was short-lived.
Levy's vocals were sampled and used in several underground and released jungle tunes in Jamaica in the 1990s, and more often in the United Kingdom, but his songs were still popular in Jamaica and increasingly in the United Kingdom. He appeared on the BBC One music show Top of the Pops alongside Rebel MC (Congo Natty) and Tenor Fly as his album "Here I Come" was sampled by Rebel MC, with Rebel MC & Tenor Fly sampling his song "Here I Come" becoming the UK Top 40 hit "Tribal Base" on June 20, 1991.
He published Living Dangerously in 1998, which included a collaboration with Bounty Killer, one of Jamaica's most popular deejays, as well as with Snoop Dogg. The book was one of Levy's most popular since the 1990s, and it saw him finally win in the United States. Levy appeared on two songs on Long Beach Dub All Stars' 1999 album Right Back, as well as a handful of shows with the band. He appeared on "Top of the World," a Rascalz track titled "Top of the World," as well as K-os. Levy appeared on two singles by rapper Shyne ("Bad Boyz" and "Bonnie & Shyne") as well as on a track for drum and bass artist Aphrodite's 2000 album Aftershock. In 2001, "Here I Come" resurfaced on the charts, with Levy and Talisman P's latest iteration ranked at number 37 in the United Kingdom, with a new version of "Here I Come" achieving number 37 in the UK.
He contributed to the development of the album White People by Handsome Boy Modeling School in 2004, a collaboration between Prince Paul and Dan the Automator. On their 2005 album Closer to the Sun, he also worked with Slightly Stoopid. Levy appeared on Red-1 of the Rascalz's single "No Fuss" from his 2007 album Beg For Nothing.
He launched "Love the Way She Love," a mash-up with Mr. Vegas, in September 2013, and announced an acoustic album with new songs and reworkings of old hits such as "Prison Oval Rock" and "Black Roses." In 2016, his album, Acousticalevy, was nominated for the Best Reggae Album.
Levy appeared on "Meanwhile" with Jelani Blackman in 2021.
