Early life
Ingham was born in 1932 in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, to Irene (née Bolton) and Harold Ellis Ingham. He was educated at Heath Grammar School and became a Royal Artillery officer.

Acting career
Ingham made his Manchester debut with the Library Theatre Company and then moved to Old Vic in London. He has appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mermaid Theatre Company, and the Royal National Theatre.
Ingham appeared in more than 200 British and American films and television shows, including Undermind, 'Test for the Future,' Episode 9, an ATV (Associated Television) production that aired on 3/7/1967; also the lead in A Challenge to Robin Hood (1967). He had a brief stint as an ambitious government minister in The Power Game in 1969 after playing Sejanus in Granada TV's The Caesars (1968). Ingham, an unscrupulous arms dealer, took the lead in the series Hine in 1971. Sir John Gield's debut on Broadway and later appeared in many Broadway musicals, including Copperfield on Broadway and opposite Angela Lansbury in the London production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable in 1973. Ingham did not remain with the show when it was transferred to Broadway. He was praised for his role as King Pellinore in the 1981-82 revival of Camelot starring Richard Harris. Basil of Baker Street, the lead character of Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, appeared in 1986.
Bingham appeared in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, opposite Sarah Brightman on Broadway, in 1991-92. Sir Danvers Carew played him in the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde for his last Broadway outing. Ingham opened the show in 1997 and stayed with it for four years until it came to an end in January 2001. He appeared in the 2001 film adaptation of the musical.
In 1976, Ingham appeared onstage in Australia, appearing in No.l Coward's Private Lives. In the 1989 film "Up the Long Ladder," he made a guest appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
