Universal Orlando has settled a racial discrimination lawsuit that accused actors portraying the Despicable Me character Gru of doing a white power symbol when photographing non-white children. Tiffiney and Richard Zinger, Geisy Moreno, and Joel Rodriguez filed the lawsuits. Both sets of parents reported that their children were victims of the discrimination in two separate incidents in February and March 2019. The first incident occurred during breakfast at a resort hotel, and the second occurred within a Universal theme park. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the terms of the deal between the parties have not been disclosed publicly. On September 12, the lawsuit was closed. The two families' originals sued Universal Orlando for $30,000. The lawsuit was filed in Orange County, Florida. The case alleged that the corporation was in breach of the 1992 Florida Civil Rights Act. Austin Walker and Joseph Saenz, two actors portraying the characters, were identified by Florida Politics in April 2022 as Austin Walker and Joseph Saenz.
