Ashfaq Ahmed Khan (Urdu) was a writer, playwright, and broadcaster from Pakistan, who died on September 22, 1925. His publications in Urdu included books, short stories, and plays for television and radio of Pakistan. He was given the President's Pride of Achievement and Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) awards for his lifetime contributions to Pakistan's cultural heritage.
Early life
Ahmed was born in Muktsar, Punjab, British India, on August 22, 1925, in an ethnic Pashtun family of the Mohmand tribe. He began his childhood in Muktsar.
He migrated to Pakistan and settled in Lahore, Punjab, just before India's partition in 1947. He obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Urdu literature from Government College Lahore. Bano Qudsia, his wife and companion in Urdu literary circles, was his classmate at the Government College.
Ahmed travelled extensively and knew Punjabi, Urdu, English, Italian, and French.
Career
He wrote stories as a child and had been published in Phool (Flower), a children's magazine. After returning to Pakistan from Europe, he launched Dastaango (Story Teller), and joined Radio Pakistan as a script writer. In place of Pakistan's popular poet Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum, he was made editor of Lail-o-Nahar [Day and Night].
Ashfaq Ahmed began his radio program, Talqeen Shah (The Preacher), which made him well-known in towns and villages. He was elected director of the Markazi Urdu Board in 1966, which was later renamed Urdu Science Board, a post that he held for 29 years. He was on the board until 1979. During Zia-ul-Haq's reign, he served as an advisor in the Education Ministry.
Ahmed wrote more than thirty books. In 1955, his short story (afsana) Gaddarya (The Shepherd) earned him his first fame.
He created the Central Board for Urdu Development in Lahore from his own funds.
