Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani (1941-), more popularly known as Asaram, is a controversial Godman who appeared in India and abroad, and commanded a following among politicians and common people.
Several court suits have been opened against him, including unlawful encroachment, rape, and witness tampering.
Asaram was found guilty of the rape of a minor girl in April 2018 and is now serving life term in Jodhpur.
Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, the apex group of Hindu Sants (saints) and Sadhus (ascetics) in India, declared Asaram as a fake baba in December 2017.
Early life
Asaram was born in the Berani village of the Nawabshah District in British India (present-day Berani Town is located in Jam Nawaz Ali Tehsil, Sindh Pakistan's north-west district), to Menhgi and Thaumal Sirumalani in the Sindh caste. Asumal Harpalani, Asumal Sirumalani, was his birthname.
Following India's partition in 1947, he and his family migrated to Ahmedabad, then part of India's former Bombay State (now Gujarat), leaving behind their immovable assets in Sindh, where Asaram's father established a coal and wood selling business. After his father's death, Asumal operated this firm for a short time. When his father died, he began his formal education at Jai Hind High School, up-till class III.
Asumal had a tradition of running away from home, beginning at the age of 15 when he fled to an ashram eight days before his eventual wedding. A local religio-spiritual figure had ordained him as his disciple at an ashram in Gandhidham and named him Asaram on October 7, 1964.
According to reports, he has worked in a variety of industries, from selling liquors and tea to rebuilding cycles and trading sugar long before his appointment as a religious leader.
Personal life
Asaram has two children, Narayan Sai's son, and a daughter. Asaram was always a householder, and he was never ordained a monk. Narayan, their son, works with Asaram. A session judge sentenced Narayan to life in a rape lawsuit brought against him by a former woman devotee in 2013.
