The Invisible Life of Mrs Orwell, which chronicles the early days of the 1984 author's first wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy (right) was published in August. Orwell was described as'sadistic,'misogynistic,'homophobic,'homophobic, and "sometimes violent" when speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Ms Funder spoke about Ms O'Shaughnessy's contributions to Orwell's career, including how she aided him in writing his 1945 masterpiece Animal Farm. However, she also stated that Orwell brought Celia Kirwan as a lover on a trip to Wales with his friend Arthur Koestler in the 1940s, following his wife's death. Ms Funder said Orwell had made love in a 'Burma-Sergeant fashion' by acting in a rushed fashion and adding, 'Ah, that's better,' after the tryst, before turning over in bed.

ANDREW PIERCE: Baroness Falkner of Margravine, the first Muslim to serve on a parliamentary frontbench, is no stranger to party politics' tumultuous and tumble. However, nothing prepared the lifelong Lib Dem, who was born and raised in Pakistan, for the outpouring of racial and misogynistic violence when she had the confidence to step into Pakistan's highly charged arena of trans rights. Last month, Falkner, 68, the chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), argued that the Equality Act should be amended to ensure that the'sex' was taken to mean 'biological sex'. Falkner, the equality minister, also requested that the Act be amended to include explicit legal rights for biological women in same-sex environments, such as changing rooms and hospital wards, and to exclude trans people from female sports in a 19-page letter. The response from the well-funded trans lobby was both coordinated and savage, with the surge of vitriol on social media particularly offensive.
