Antonio Adán Garrido (Spanish pronunciation: anántonjo acan; born on May 13, 1987) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for Primeira Liga team Sporting CP.
He was primarily a back-up plan for Real Madrid, and he spent the bulk of his time with Betis. He appeared in 129 La Liga games for those two clubs, as well as Atlético Madrid, for whom he signed in 2018. In Abroad, he competed for Cagliari in Serie A and gained a Primeira Liga crown with Sporting CP.
Adán earned 39 caps for Spain, according to both youth and adults.
Club career
Adán, a Real Madrid youth graduate, was the first-choice goalkeeper for the Barcelona team in 2005–06 season, playing 36 games and conceding 29 goals. He appeared three times for the Juvenil team, which also kept a clean record in the tournament.
Adán was selected for the first team's United States tour in August 2006 during his campaign. He was a backup to captain Jordi Codina in Real Madrid Castilla until the latter's promotion to the main squad.
In a 1–1 away draw with CD Castellón on August 27, Adán made his debut in 2006–07's Segunda División. As Real's reserves were eventually relegated, he appeared in six league games.
Adán was promoted to the senior squad for pre-season training in 2009-2010 after the auction of Codina to neighbour Getafe CF. Despite being predominantly B's, he was the third choice in the first team behind Iker Casillas and Jerzy Dudek.
Adán's first competitive game for Real Madrid was on December 8th, 2010. In the 44th minute of the 4–0 home win over AJ Auxerre in the UEFA Champions League's group stage, the Merengues had already won their group, but manager José Mourinho rested several starters. In the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey (8–2 on aggregate), he played the entire 90 minutes in a 0–2 loss at Levante UD.
In the second minute of a 1–0 away victory over RCD Espanyol, Adán made his La Liga debut on February 13, 2011, knocking out Casillas. In a 2–0 victory over Levante, he kept a clean sheet starting the following matchday.
Adán relegated longtime incumbent Casillas to the bench in a 3–2 away loss to Málaga CF on December 22, 2012; Mourinho defended his decision in his post-match remarks by saying, "It's a scientific call." International career
Adán captained the Spain under 19 team all the way to winning the UEFA European Championship, as well as four other Real Madrid products: Alberto Bueno, Javi Garca, Esteban Granero, and Juan Mata.
He was later called up to the under-21 squad for the 2007 European Championship play-off against Italy in October 2006, but Spain lost 1–2 on aggregate. In a 2–2 friendly draw with England at Pride Park Stadium on February 6, 2007, he made his first and only appearance at that level.
