Antanas Sireika Career

Coaching career

The head coach is normally replaced by his assistant coach Jonas Kazlauskas, and the Lithuanian national basketball team often switches to his assistant. When Kazlauskas' successor was recalled as his assistant coach Antanas Sireika, the story was repeated in 2001. He was born in Siauliai and a significant portion of his basketball career was spent there. Siauliai began playing as a player and then became the team's playing head coach. The underdog iauliai's were the 3rd-place winners in the LKL, achieving significant success in a short time. Kazlauskas, the Lithuanian national basketball team's head coach, and he invited Sireika to join the team as his assistant in 1997. Kazlauskas retired from the national team in 2001 and moved to Sireika. After Lithuania's independence in 1991 (the first titles were awarded in 1937 and 1939), the Lithuanian national basketball team won their first Eurobasket gold medals after their country's independence in 1991 (the first titles were won in 1937 and 1939).

Sireika made an important decision last year: he left his hometown in iauliai and moved to Kaunas to work with algiris Kaunas.' In 2003, 2004, 2004, and 2005, he captured three LKL titles in a row. Sireika guided the Lithuanian team to a 4th place at the 2004 Summer Olympics with a dramatic win over the United States.

The giris Kaunas of 2003 began to fade away from all the EuroLeague glory they had a few years ago. All Giris' EuroLeague results got worse every year. Sireika was facing a lot of criticism in the 2005–06 season due to poor results in EuroLeague and Lietuvos rytas Vilnius, who was ranked in the Lithuanian league standings. Sireika's coached algiris played against Lietuvos rytas on March 28, 2006 in a LKL regular season rivalry match, losing by 30 points. After the game, Sireika was suspended from the team.

Lithuania was named one of the candidates to win gold and protect their 2003 title in EuroBasket 2005, but Lithuania's team finished first in the division and reached the quarter finals, losing 47-63 to France led by Tony Parker. The Lithuanian team earned their 5th position, and more criticism was directed at Sireika. In 2006, he had his last chance at an FIBA World Championship. In the group that qualified for the 1/8 finals, Lithuania came in third place. They were defeated by Spain in the quarterfinals, and they lost to Turkey in fifth through eighth place games, and Sireika resigned.

UNICS Kazan's Sireika Sireika as their new head coach, the Lithuanian trio, Lavrinovi brothers and Saulius tombergas led Unics to the semifinals in 2006, but the team lost to Real Madrid and did not progress to the final. UNICS surprised the world by finishing second second after the EuroLeague champions CSKA Moscow in the Russian Basketball Super League and winning games against Dynamo Moscow, Khimki, and Triumph Lyubertsy defeated opponents like Dynamo Moscow, Khimki, and Triumph Lyubertsy. UNICS was 8th in the Russian Super League, as Russia's basketball experts predicted, but Sireika was suspended from the head coaching position and moved to assistant.

Lietuvos rytas Vilnius hasn't won any money in 2008, the first domestic titles have been lost to algiris Kaunas. Lietuvos rytas Vilnius started to build a new team after losing to many former players, Aleksandar Trifunovi was fired as head coach, and Sireika was appointed as the head coach a few weeks after losing in the LKL finals. However, he resigned and returned to iauliai's fortnight as their head coach just after two months.
