Pancreatic cancer, famed for subtle and symptoms that means for the vast majority of cases are only caught in its later and deadlier stages, kills almost 10,000 Brits each year. But a new tool hopes to turn the tide and boost survival rates for the disease. Charity Pancreatic Cancer UK, with the support of NHS England, are launching The Family History Checker an online resource which helps people assess their genetic risk of pancreatic cancer. One person who knows all too well the fear of inheriting pancreatic cancer is Rachel Smith (left). The 42-year-old has seen both her father and brother been hit by the disease. It was only in January when the 58-year-old suddenly woke up in the middle of the night fearing he was suffering a heart attack that tests showed he had multiple tumours on his liver and pancreas. After doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic cancer in February, he lost four stone in just two months and decided he was too unwell to receive chemotherapy. He died weeks later at home on May 28.

As top experts acknowledge that the rise of deadly disease has baffled young women and girls, alarming over 20% rise in pancreatic cancer in young women and girls

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 23, 2024
Cancer experts have been encouraged to publish more research into a 'frightening' rise in pancreatic cancer rates in younger women, with the incidence up by more than 50% since the 1990s. Overall, incidences of the disease, which has a five-year survival rate of just 5 percent, have increased by around 17 percent over the same period, with increasing obesity rates suspected to be behind the trend. On the other hand, oncologists are unable to explain the particular rise in young women, with no such rise in men of the same age. According to MailOnline, Professor Karol Sikora, a world-renowned oncologist with more than 40 years, there are theories that have to do with the modern diet. However, so far, analysts haven't a clue' about the 'frightening' trend, especially among young women. 'It has to do with diet change over the past 20 years,' he said. Thankfully, pancreatic cancer is uncommon in young people, but it is nonetheless worrying.' We're not sure we have all the answers,' it says.' He added that Britain wasn't alone in this trend, with studies from the United States finding similar rises in the disease throughout the Atlantic, and that more research was needed to determine the source. Nicola Smith, senior health information manager at Cancer Research UK, said more research was required to determine why pancreatic cancer rates in the United Kingdom were increasing. The number of 'pancreatic cancer cases in the United Kingdom is on the rise, and we've seen a small rise in the number of young women being diagnosed.' 'More study is now required to fully understand why this is happening.' Pancreatic cancer kills about 10,000 British people every year, with subtle signs that may not be apparent in its final stages. Becki Buggs (top right), 45, who was one of the few patients whose cancer was detected early enough for surgery, was one of the rare survivors of the disease.

Andy Rourke's death brought the Smiths' brief career to a halt

Few bands have blazed so well for so short a time, with just five years of ferocious performances establishing their place as one of England's best-known indie music legends. The most apparent reason for their break-up was a row about royalties, but other factors had been cited that have sparked much debate to this day. In June 1987, the first rumblings occurred when guitarist Johnny Marr decided to take a break after stating himself drained by the workload. The band is seen from left to right: Marr, Morrissey, Joyce, and Rourke are among the artists on display. Morrissey is also seen correctly.

Since the death of Andy Rourke, 59, five warning signs of pancreatic cancer have been identified

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 19, 2023
We take a look at some of early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that are so subtle that it is often only detected in later, deadlier stages. Rourke's former bandmate Johnny Marr revealed the tragic news on Twitter this morning, describing Rourke, aged 59, as a "supremely gifted guitarist." As the Smiths became one of Britain's most influential bands during the 1980s, they joined drummer Mike Joyce in a pounding and melodic rhythm section under Marr's pioneering chords. Pancreatic cancer deaths reached just shy of 10,000 British people a year, with only 5 percent of people who get the disease surviving in the next decade. Although survival rates for the majority of cancers have increased over the years as a result of medical advancement, pancreatic cancer has not changed at all since the 1970s. This is in part due to how easy it is to miss early signs of the disease, meaning that it is only visible at later, more dangerous stages. Here MailOnline reveals some of the early warning signs of pancreatic cancer:
