Andrew Alcott Hallett (1975-2004) was an American singer and actor who rose to fame after appearing in Lorne's television series Angel (2000-2004).
He appeared on the show often and performed two songs on the series's 2005 soundtrack album, Angel: Live Fast, Die Never.
Early life
Hallett was an only child and hails from Osterville, Massachusetts, which is part of Barnstable, Massachusetts. He attended Barnstable High School in 1993 and moved to Assumption College in Worcester after graduation.
He did not begin singing professionally until being asked onstage at a festival and discovered the awe of performing. When she coaxed a group of guys into the audience at a Patti LaBelle concert in Boston, she was this little white boy." I started singing, and the house was blown down. "This is a white boy with a soul," I sang a line.
Career
Hallett began as a runner for an agency and then as a property manager in Los Angeles. Kai Cole, the wife of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, became his personal assistant. At the "B.B." level, the couple and their families were taken to Hallett's performance. In his latest film Angel: Lorne, an anagogic demon who reads the hearts and futures of his guests when they sing in his karaoke bar, Whedon created a new character in his Kings lounge. Hallett was encouraged to audition for the role and won it after three auditions. Angel played in his first real role as an actor in a 1999 Buffy episode; he only got agent Pat Brady after she discovered him singing and acting in "Judgment," Angel's second season's premiere episode.
Lorne's character was introduced in 45 episodes before being added to the title sequence as a series regular for the last nine episodes of the fourth season, and all of the fifth; in total, he appeared as Lorne in 76 of the show's 110 episodes. The character's demonic visage needed extensive prosthetic makeup and intricate coloring of his face, neck, and hands, resulting in early calls for at least two and a half hours of makeup before Hallett's filming day began.
Hallett appeared in two other small films during Angel's run: The Enforcers (2001), a television miniseries directed by Angel writer Mere Smith, and Chance (2002), a film directed by Buffy actress Amber Benson.
