Rob Key on why an Australian can play for England in the Ashes, the problem with Bazball's critics and why Andrew Flintoff doesn't need coaching qualifications to be a star
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 26, 2024
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE BOOTH: Rob Key allows himself a smile as he reflects on a lively couple of weeks. First England's Test team blew their chance of a first perfect summer for 20 years with a sloppy performance against Sri Lanka at The Oval. Now the white-ball reset has made a mixed start against Australia. To complicate matters, the stand-in 50-over captain Harry Brook reacted to his team's collapse in the first ODI at Trent Bridge last week by saying: 'If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares?' The point he wanted to make was that one type of dismissal is no worse than another. But it was the last two words of his rhetorical question that poked the hornet's nest - and Brook was still explaining himself even after his unbeaten century helped England pull one back in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.

www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 7, 2024
Andrew Flintoff has been appointed England Lions coach on an initial 12-month agreement. Flintoff, 46, will begin work in October, overseeing tours to South Africa and Australia either side of Christmas and home matches against India A and Zimbabwe next summer. The former England captain's rise through the coaching ranks over the past year has been catalysed by the ECB's men's director Rob Key, a close friend, who believes he has similar motivational qualities required to work at the highest level as those of Brendon McCullum.

Andrew Flintoff appeared to be loving life as he rejoined the England coaching setup ahead of the team's final Test of the summer. Flintoff, 46, has taken on a coaching role with England over the past 12 months after returning to the sport following his horror Top Gear crash in December 2022. He will not be involved when England face Australia in white-ball cricket later this month, with interim boss Marcus Trescothick taking charge prior to Brendon McCullum becoming England's all-format coach from January.
Andrew Flintoff turns down coaching role for England's white ball series against Australia, while son Rocky scores 32 in his maiden first-class innings for Lancashire
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 22, 2024
Rocky Flintoff scored 32 in his maiden first-class innings for Lancashire against Surrey as he became the 10th-youngest debutant in county championship history. On the day he collected his GCSE results, Flintoff - aged 16 years 137 days - fell to a brilliant diving catch by Indian overseas pro Sai Sudharshan at backward point from Jordan Clark's first ball after lunch, as Lancashire were dismissed for 204 by the defending champions. Meanwhile, Andrew Flintoff - Rocky's father - has turned down the chance to be part of the dressing-room for England's white-ball series against Australia next month.
Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams On Tour review: He's lost the cheeky persona, but cricket can still bring back brave Freddie's glow, writes CHRISTOPHER STEVENS

August 13, 2024
It's this feeling that he was desperate to share with a motley gang of lads from his hometown, Preston, in Lancashire, when he first taught them the game two years ago - and it's this feeling that can be a lifeline for Freddie (as everyone knows him) now. Freddie Flintoff's Field Of Dreams On Tour is his first TV documentary since his horrendous accident while filming for BBC One's Top Gear in December 2022.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY WILL PICKWORTH: It is a moment that perfectly encapsulates just how revered Jimmy Anderson is by the English cricketing public. Less than an hour after Anderson closed the curtain on an incredible career that saw him become the first seam bowler to pass 700 wickets in Test cricket following the first Test of the summer against the West Indies, he wandered out on to the Lord's balcony. There, Anderson was greeted by thousands of fans scattered across the outfield, ready to pay their respects.
Freddie Flintoff tells how Top Gear crash left him battling anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks - and 'crying every two minutes': Cricket legend speaks for the first time about how he cheated death, saying even now he's not 'better', but 'different'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 5, 2024
Andrew Flintoff has revealed his Top Gear horror crash has left him struggling with 'anxiety', 'nightmares' and 'flashbacks', as he admitted that he 'genuinely should not be here'. The former England cricketer, 46, has spoken for the first time about the devastating impact the car accident has had on his life, in a new TV series for the BBC. Admitting he had cheated death in the incident, he said he would have to deal with the consequences of the crash 'for the rest of my life' and was now 'different' to what he used to be. One piece of footage recorded not long after the incident shows the shocking injuries he sustained. Lying on a bed, with wounds visible on his face, he admits he needs to stop 'crying every two minutes'.
Matthew Mott is SACKED as England's white-ball coach, with Ashes hero named as his interim replacement - but Jos Buttler stays as captain despite two disappointing World Cup defences
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 30, 2024
LAWRENCE BOOTH: Matthew Mott has been sacked as England's white-ball coach, confirming the game's worst-kept secret and handing captain Jos Buttler the chance to reboot two failing limited-overs sides with an appointment more to his liking. The aim is to have a full-time coach in place for the tour of the West Indies in late October, with Andrew Flintoff, Eoin Morgan and Vikram Solanki among the likely candidates. The Australian Mott, who had settled into family life in Cardiff and leaves halfway through his four-year contract, paid the price for two underwhelming World Cup defences.
Why Andrew Flintoff has been a revelation as a coach... and the one thing he must change if he is to get a shot at England, writes AADAM PATEL
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 29, 2024
AADAM PATEL IN LEEDS: As the majority of the 12,857-strong crowd filtered out of Headingley after a one-sided encounter between Northern Superchargers and Trent Rockets on Friday night, a handful of fans remained and gathered by the dugout. It was only last summer when Andrew Flintoff was wearing a hat and scarf in public to hide his severe facial injuries after that horrific Top Gear accident but here the 46-year-old was in full flow, signing dozens of autographs and taking pictures with those that remained. 'You're still my hero, Fred,' came the shout from a middle-aged man to which Flintoff laughed and responded with a thumbs up.
Like father, like son! Rocky Flintoff, 16, lives up to his family name as he becomes Lancashire's youngest EVER first-team cricketer to follow in the footsteps of dad Andrew
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Flintoff, aged just 16 and 113 days, is younger than any other player in the 160-year history of the county and has also impressed internationally for England's U-19s. The teenager signed his professional contract with Lancashire last month after catching the eye for their second XI, having scored a ton against Warwickshire in April, and has been rewarded with a record-breaking appearance at Blackpool. He is a product of Lancashire's County Age Group system and joined their academy in 2023, another step on a remarkable journey that began at U-10 level. Flintoff's superb innings of 106 in the second Test against Sri Lanka saw him burst into the spotlight and made him England U-19s youngest-ever centurion.
Andrew Flintoff is being lined up as England's new white-ball coach with former star, 46, set to make return to key cricket role just 18 months after Top Gear horror crash
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 26, 2024
RICHARD GIBSON: Until Friday night, Flintoff had not taken charge of a professional side, but neither had Brendon McCullum overseen a first-class match when Rob Key made him Test coach two years ago - an appointment credited with revitalising England's fortunes. Key also plumped for Matthew Mott soon after he arrived as the ECB's director of men's cricket in the spring of 2022, but has found himself conducting a white-ball review this week following two underwhelming World Cup title defences within the space of eight months. Change now feels inevitable after a team fronted by Mott and captained by Jos Buttler followed up crashing out in the group stages of the 50-over event on the subcontinent last November, with just three wins in nine matches, by losing to eventual winners India in the semi-final of the Twenty20 version in Guyana.

The two boosts include Trent Rockets to win, hit the most sixes and the most fours at 7/2, and Jason Roy to score the most runs for the Superchargers and Alex Hales to score the most runs for the Rockets at 20/1. Hales in particular has had a great career in the short form of the game, with the 35-year-old averaging a respectable 31 in T20s at an international level.
England star Harry Brook to use time in charge of Northern Superchargers to decide on future captaincy roles after being touted as replacement for Jos Buttler
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 24, 2024
LAWRENCE BOOTH: Harry Brook wants to sample life in charge of Northern Superchargers in the Hundred next month before deciding whether to add the England white-ball captaincy to his bucket list. Brook has been touted as a replacement for Jos Buttler, who spoke to Rob Key on Monday as part of the ECB managing director's review of the limited-overs set-up following a pair of underwhelming World Cup defences in India and the Caribbean. No decision is expected on the future of either Buttler or head coach Matthew Mott until after the third Test against West Indies, starting at Edgbaston on Friday- though speculation has long been rife that Brook is among the candidates.
Stuart Broad claims Andrew Flintoff's role as Northern Superchargers coach is a potential audition for the England job - as the iconic all-rounder gets set to link up with Ben Stokes in The Hundred
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 23, 2024
Stuart Broad suspects Andrew Flintoff is being groomed for a role as England head coach with a stint alongside Ben Stokes overseeing Northern Superchargers. Flintoff has gravitated back towards cricket following a horror crash while filming for the BBC show Top Gear in December 2022, becoming increasingly involved with England's white-ball set-up. The former England captain and star of the 2005 Ashes was part of the backroom staff for the recent T20 World Cup and has been touted as a replacement for under-fire Matthew Mott following the team's surrender of both limited-overs global crowns in the last few months.
Runs in the family! Andrew Flintoff's son Rocky, 16, hits superb century for England's Under-19s against Sri Lanka - and marks his first Test ton with a fist-pump celebration
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 18, 2024
Andrew Flintoff's 16-year-old son Rocky hit a superb century for England's Under-19s against Sri Lanka on Thursday, continuing his meteoric rise in youth cricket. The teenager converted his overnight 82 into three figures off 176 balls before being dismissed five deliveries later for 106. Rocky's innings came after England captain Hamza Shaikh had made 107 while Jaydn Denly, nephew of former England batter Joe, struck 91 from just 120 deliveries at the top of the order.
I backed Sir Alastair Cook, made up with Ben Stokes - and went on almost as long as Jimmy Anderson! Thank you, it's been a blast writes, outgoing cricket correspondent PAUL NEWMAN after a mighty innings for Mail Sport
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 9, 2024
PAUL NEWMAN: Cricket is a very different game now to the one I started covering as a correspondent for Mail Sport and it is one I leave, after more than 17 years, in a more precarious state than ever. Michael Atherton tells how, in early 2008, he warned a group of journalists that if the IPL was not checked by administrators, it would rapidly become the dominant force in the game. How they all scoffed. Well, most of them. I was in that bar in Dunedin during England's tour of New Zealand and, as I remember it, was pretty much the only voice in agreement with Athers who, then as now, is one of the best thinkers on our great game.

Brook, 25, is viewed as Jos Buttler's successor as England's white-ball captain when the time for change arrives, and will get the chance to add to his experience at domestic level after being appointed by new Superchargers coach Andrew Flintoff. 'It's an honour to captain Northern Superchargers, and I'm really excited for it,' Brook said.

Rocky Flintoff hit a match-winning 106 as England Under-19s chased down 288 to beat a Young Lions Invitational XI by two wickets at Loughborough. The 16-year-old son of former England all-rounder Andrew hit eight fours and three sixes in a 111-ball innings which steered his side to victory after they lost both openers in the first five overs. Rocky Flintoff, the 16-year-old son of 2005 Ashes star Andrew Flintoff, has received his maiden England call-up. Flintoff junior, currently sitting his GCSEs, was on Tuesday named in the 16-strong England Under-19 squad to face Sri Lanka in three one-day internationals. In April, he struck his first men's hundred for Lancashire, playing for the second XI against Warwickshire just a fortnight after his 16th birthday.
