Amanda Peterson (born Phyllis Amanda Peterson, July 8, 1971 β July 3, 2015) was an American actress, most known for her role as Cindy Mancini in the 1987 comedy film Can't Buy Me Love.
Early life
Peterson was born in Greeley, Colorado, the youngest of three children born to James Peterson, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and his wife Sylvia. She had two older siblings: a sister, Anne Marie and a brother, James, Jr. Peterson began acting as a child and used the name "Amanda Peterson" in a professional capacity. In the beginning of her career, she used the name "Mandy Peterson", which was what friends and family called her.
Career
In The Sound of Music's stage production, Peterson made her stage debut at age seven as Gretl. She appeared in Annie as a dancing extra at the age of 11. Peterson then moved to land visitor spots on Father Murphy and Silver Spoons. She has also appeared in more than 50 television commercials. She co-starred Squirt Sawyer on NBC's drama series Boone during the 1983-84 television season. After one season, Boone was canceled.
Peterson appeared in the Explorers for the first time in 1985. In the Emmy Award-winning miniseries A Year in the Life, she co-starred "Sunny Sisk" next year. The miniseries was well-received; it was the third-highest-rated miniseries of the 1986-87 US television season, with a 16.9/27 rating/share. Later, it was turned into a television show of the same name that aired on NBC from 1987 to 1988. Peterson received the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actress in a Television Drama Series for her role on the series. Despite being well-received, A Year in the Life was cancelled after one season.
In 1986, 15-year-old Peterson appeared in Boy Rents Girl, opposite Patrick Dempsey. The film was shot on location in Tucson, Arizona. After producers secured the rights to The Beatles' 1964 song of the same name, the title was renamed Can't Buy Me Love. Can't Buy Me Love, which was released in 1987, received mixed feedback, but it became the summer's sleeper hit. Peterson and Dempsey gained teen idol status and debuted on the front pages of teen magazines like Tiger Beat and Teen Beat after its launch, and they have since appeared in Teen Beat and Teen Beat.
Peterson's family admitted she was assaulted at age 15 and had not revealed it at the time in a September 2015 interview with talk show The Doctors.
Peterson co-starred in a Roger Corman production The Lawless Land, a post-apocalyptic film, followed by a role in the 1989 teen drama Listen to Me. She returned to Greeley, where she graduated from University High School (while living in Los Angeles) later this year. She appeared in the television film Fatal Charm a few years after graduating. Peterson enrolled at Middlebury College in the fall, where she appeared in a black box performance of Sarah Daniels' play Masterpieces. She appeared on Doogie Howser, M.D., while on semester break. Peterson dropped out of Middlebury College later this year. In 1994, she returned to acting in the fantasy film WindRunner in a role alongside Jason Wiles. It was Peterson's last onscreen role.
