Amancio Ortega Gaona Life

Amancio Ortega Gaona (born 28 March 1936) is a Spanish billionaire businessman.

He is the founder and former chairman of Inditex fashion company, which is best known for its chain of Zara clothing and accessories shops.

Ortega had a net worth of $68.3 billion as of December 2019, making him Europe's second-wealthest individual after Bernard Arnault and the sixth-wealthiest in the world.

For a brief period of time in 2015, he was the world's richest man, defeating Bill Gates as Zara's net worth reached $80 billion.

Early life and education

Ortega, the youngest of four children, was born in Busdongo de Arbas, Spain, to Antonio Ortega Rodro and Josefa Gaona Hernández, who lived in Tolosa, Gipuzkoa, where he spent his childhood.

He left school and moved to A Corua at the age of 14, due to his father's work as a railway worker. He found a job as a shophand for a local shirt manufacturer named Gala, which also lives on the same corner in downtown A Corua, and learned to make clothes by hand.

Personal life

Ortega is extremely private about his personal life, and he has only given three interviews to journalists as of 2012. Ortega is very private and keeps a low profile. No photograph of Ortega had been released before 1999.

He likes to dress simply, refuses to wear a tie, and generally prefers a basic uniform of a blue blazer, white shirt, and gray trousers, none of which are Zara products.

In 1966, he married Rosala Goyenechea, and the couple had two children, Marcos and Sandra Ortega Mera, who died in 1986. Mera died in August 2013 at the age of 69. Flora Pérez Marcote married him in 2001, with whom he had a daughter, Marta Ortega Pérez, in 1984. Despite owning a substantial real estate portfolio, he primarily lives with his wife in his apartment in A Coru, Spain, as of 2017.

He is mainly seen being driven around in a black Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W2221) and a black Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (X166). He owns two yachts, "Drizzle" and "Valoria B," as well as the Gulfstream G650 and Bombardier Private Jets.

Amancio Ortega Gaona Career

Career

He founded Confecciones Goa in 1963 to sell quilted bathrobes.

Rosal'a Mera, his wife, opened his first Zara store in 1975.

Zara was a member of the Inditex chain (Industri Textil Sociedad Anónima), of which Ortega owned 59%, and aside from more than 6,000 stores, it included brands Zara, Massimo Dutti, Oysho, Zara Home, Kiddy's Class, Tempe, Stradivarius, Pull and Bear, Bershka and Bershka.

In the Spanish financial press, his public appearance in 2000 as part of the warm-up run-up to his company's initial public offering on the stock exchange in 2001 made news. However, he has only given interviews to three journalists.

Ortega revealed his imminent departure from Inditex, the Zara chain's parent company, in 2011. Pablo Isla, the Inditex vice president and CEO, would take his place as president. Ortega gave Caritas Internationalis, a Roman Catholic relief group, almost €20 million in 2012.

In Madrid, he acquired the Torre Picasso skyscraper. In Miami, Florida, he also bought the Epic Residences and Hotel.

The Spanish Association of Foundations awarded Amancio Ortega in the 2017 Philanthropic Initiative category in July 2017. He also donated 300 million euros to fight cancer in Spain, where 440 machines were purchased to diagnose the disease. As a result, the number of Spanish public hospitals equipped with stereotactic radiotherapy machines has increased from 20 to 70. These decisions, on the other hand, were not universally accepted and were often criticized by certain political parties, such as Podemos. According to reports, he has bought the Troy Block complex, which is regarded as one of Amazon's most prominent buildings.

Ortega's real estate investments, which were managed by his investment company Pontegadea, were valued at $17.2 billion in July 2020. Ortegadea's executive chairman and real estate investments in his portfolio include Manhattan's Haughwout Building and Southeast Financial Center. The corporation closed a $72.5 million contract for a downtown Chicago hotel in 2019, following the purchase of a building in Washington's central business district and two Seattle office buildings.

Ortega was estimated to have lost $10 billion as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Zara was never identified as something else by shoppers

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 12, 2023
Zara is a common name on high streets in the United Kingdom and around the world, but supporters of the store, which was founded by a Spanish tailor in 1975, may be surprised to learn that it was first introduced under a different name. After Amancio Ortega first founded the chain in A Coruña Galicia, he named it after a classic film from the 1960s, but a new business opening nearby under the same name caused him to think on his feet (pictured: a branch of Zara in Sydney)
