Aljamain Sterling Life

Aljamain Sterling, an American mixed martial artist, began competing in the Ultimate Combat Championship's bantamweight division in 2014 (UFC). He had won the UFC Bantamweight Championship on March 6, 2021, after his opponent Petr Yan was disqualified due to an intentional misconduct knee in the 4th round.

Aljamain became the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship title by his/her opponent's disqualification. At UFC 267, a rematch was scheduled for October 30, 2021. However, Aljamain had to withdraw from the tournament on September 25, 2021, due to persistent neck injuries.

Mixed martial arts career

Sterling was invited by Jones to try out mixed martial arts at his gym in Ithaca, New York, while studying in Cortland. Sterling left The BombSquad and started training with the Serra-Longo Fight Team a few fights into his professional career.

Sterling began his amateur career in 2009 with a submission win. With the lone loss coming by way of split decision, the pro Sterling set a 6-1 amateur record. He would later recover from this loss. Along the way, Sterling captured the Raging Wolf amateur Bantamweight Championship and the Extreme FC amateur Featherweight Championship.

Sterling started his career 2-0 before winning a shot at the ROC Bantamweight Championship. He'll win by a split decision over Claudio Ledesma to take the title. Despite the fact that this will be his last fight under the Ring of Combat organisation, it will later be signed by the Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

Sterling made his CFFC debut against Evan Chmieleski in a Featherweight match. With just two seconds remaining in the first round, he retained the fight by TKO. With this victory, he earned himself a shot at the vacant CFFC Bantamweight Championship. Sterling won his second professional title against Sean Santella by a unanimous vote. On three occasions, he would continue to defend the CFFC Bantamweight Championship. Sterling was set to make his UFC debut against Lucas Martins at UFC 170, after the injured Bryan Caraway was forced to leave the field. However, Martins was eventually hurt and was replaced by Cody Gibson, a fellow UFC newcomer. The United Kingdom won the fight by unanimous decision.

Sterling made his second appearance at UFC Fight Night 45 against Hugo Viana on July 16, 2014. Sterling's grip of the majority of the fight brought the referee to a slew of punches from the mount's position, prompting the referee to call off the match later in the third round.

On October 4, 2014, the sterling was supposed to face Mitch Gagnon at UFC Fight Night: MacDonald vs. Saffiedine. However, Sterling fell out of the game and was replaced by Rob Font.

Following a quick recovery, the pound was quickly rebooked and was scheduled to face Frankie Saenz at UFC Fight Night 55 on November 8, 2014. However, Saenz was forced to pull out of the match, and in turn, marketing newcomer Michael Imperato was briefly hired as a replacement. However, his contract was quickly ended, and, as a result, the sterling was removed from the competition entirely.

On April 18, 2015, the Sterling was scheduled to meet Manny Gamburyan at UFC on Fox 15. However, Gamburyan pulled out of the match due to injury, and Takeya Mizugaki was on hand to replace him. In the third round, the pound was defeated by submission.

At UFC Fight Night 80 on December 10, 2015, Sterling faced Johnny Eduardo. In the second round, he secured the fight by submission.

On May 29, 2016, Sterling next met Bryan Caraway at UFC Fight Night 88. Despite being dominant in the first round, the pound finally began to tire, and the following two rounds would be decided by split decision.

On December 9, 2016, the 102nd British Fight Night 102 was scheduled to face Raphael Assunço. On the other hand, Sterling pulled out of the match on November 23 due to an injury. Assunço was subsequently pulled from the card.

The Assunço match was postponed and took place on January 28, 2017 at UFC on Fox 23. The currency was defeated by a split decision.

On April 15, 2017, the Sterling team met Augusto Mendes at UFC on Fox 24. He won the contest by a unanimous vote.

On July 29, 2017, the Sterling defeated Renan Barton at UFC 214. The fight was initially scheduled to be fought at bantamweight, but the CSAC informed Baro that they would not be allowed to compete at this weight due to his inability to make the required weight at UFC 177. The match with the sterling currency ended as expected, with a catchweight of 140 lbs. The United Kingdom retained the referendum by a unanimous vote.

On December 9, 2017, the pound would face Rani Yahya at UFC Fight Night 123. However, Yahya missed the event due to illness on November 7, 2017 and was replaced by Marlon Moraes. In the first round, he lost by KO.

On April 21, 2018, Sterling took on Brett Johns at UFC Fight Night 128. He won the fight by a unanimous decision.

On September 8, 2018, Sterling defeated Cody Stamann at UFC 228. In the second round, he advanced to the fight by submission.

On February 17, 2019, the Sterling team met Jimmie Rivera at UFC on ESPN 1. He was voted unanimously in the fight.

On June 8, 2019, Sterling defeated Pedro Munhoz at UFC 238. He was awarded unanimously by the time.

On June 6, 2020, Sterling defeated Cory Sandhagen in a match that UFC president Dana White revealed to be a bantamweight champion eliminator. In the first round, he defeated the contest by submission. With this victory, he received his first Performance of the Night.

On December 12, 2020, Sterling was scheduled to meet Petr Yan for the UFC Bantamweight Championship. The match was later cancelled from the UFC 256 card due to undisclosed reasons, but it was announced on November 22 at UFC 259. In the fourth round, Sterling defeated disqualification due to an intentionally broken knee, becoming the new UFC Bantamweight Champion. He became the first wrestler to win a championship by disqualification in UFC history.

On October 30, 2021, a rematch with Yan was supposed to take place. 267. However, sterling recovered from the competition on September 25 due to lingering neck pains from surgery. Both were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 272 on March 5, 2022, but the match was postponed to UFC 273 on April 9. Sterling secured the title and defended the cause by a split decision. The bout for the British pound was scored by 11 of 18 MMA media outlets, while 5 others scored it as a draw.

On October 22, 2022, Sterling defended his crown against T.J. Dillashaw in UFC 280. In the second round, Sterling defeated TKO, resulting in the first stoppage by strikes in eight years.
