Geneviève Jane Moyet ( MOY-ay, born 18 June 1961) is an English singer, songwriter, and performer best known for her ethical bluesy contralto voice.

She came to prominence as a member of the Duo Yazoo (also known as Yaz), but she has since primarily worked as a solo artist. Her global album sales have hit a record-breaking 23 million fans, with over 2 million singles selling.

Both nine of her studio albums and three compilation albums have charted in the Top 30 UK Album Chart, with two of them reaching number one.

She has also appeared in the UK Singles Chart as a top 30 singles and five top ten hits.

Other is her ninth album, and she was released on June 16th.

Early life

Geneviève Jane Moyet was born in Billerica, Essex, to a French father and English mother. She grew up in Basildon, where she attended Janet Duke Junior School and then Nicholas Comprehensive at secondary level.

She appeared in a number of punk rock, pub rock, and blues bands in the South East Essex area during the 1970s and early 1980s, including the Vandals, the Screamin' Ab Dabs, the Vicars, and the Little Roosters (the latter featuring Garrie Lammin, formerly of Cock Sparrer).

Personal life

Moyet's first marriage, to hairdresser and former London firefighter Malcolm Lee, with whom she has a son, resulted in divorce. Moyet has a daughter with her former husband Kim McCarthy, as well as a daughter with her current husband David Ballard. Moyet migrated from Radlett, Hertfordshire, to Brighton in 2013.

Moyet has opened up about her battles with weight and agoraphobia, as well as the challenges of having ADHD. She started losing weight because she did not want to be "an obese old woman."

Professional music writers association The Ivors Academy presented Moyet with a Gold Badge Award on October 14, 2014.

In the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to music, Moyet was elected Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Career

Moyet began teaching at the age of 16 and then trained as a piano tuner.

Moyet's mainstream pop career began in 1982 with the formation of the synthpop duo Yazoo with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. The band was active in the United States under the name Yaz due to trademark issues with the Yazoo Records record label, which was then still operating in the region. Yazoo had several hits, including "Only You," "Don't Go," "Situation," and "Nobody's Diary," among others. The two albums, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both, were released.

Clarke decided to disband Yazoo in 1983. Clarke went on to form The Assembly (another duo with Eric Radcliffe) and then Erasure (a duo with Andy Bell), Moyet signed to CBS and began her solo career. In 1984, Moyet released her debut solo album Alf (named after her punk-era nickname). Jolley & Swain's record-producing and songwriting staff produced Alf. The album was co-written by the pair and Moyet, with the exception of "Invisible," which was written for Moyet by Lamont Dozier. The record in the United Kingdom was a hit, with the No. 1 ranked No. In the album chart, number 1 is at number one. "Love Resurrection" is Alf's third international hit single (UK No. 2). (No. 10), "Invisible" (UK No. 10). (U.K. No. 21) and "All Cried Out" (All Cried Out). 8). "Invisible" was a Top 40 hit in the United States. "For You Only" was also released in some European territories.

Moyet appeared at Live Aid alongside Paul Young in 1985 and then returned unscheduled to the stage (alongside Bob Geldof, David Bowie, and Pete Townshend) when Paul McCartney's vocal microphone at his piano died, leaving him unable to be heard for the first stanza of the song. (He overdubbed his vocal for the Live Aid DVD release twenty years ago.) In addition, Moyet released a single not included on Alf, a front of the common "That Ole Devil Called Love" which soared to No. 1 on the charts, which also reached No. 1. 2 on the UK Singles Chart (it remains Moyet's most popular UK single).

"Is This Love?" Moyet's second biggest UK hit in the upcoming year. (co-written by Eurythmics' Dave Stewart under the pseudonym Jean Guiot) and Raindancing, her second LP, followed in 1987. Raindancing produced more hit singles, including a remix of Floy Joy's "Weak in the Presence of Beauty" and "Ordinary Girl." With "Love Letters," she scored another cover hit in 1987, and her peak at No. 1 in the United Kingdom stood. 4. The comedy team, French & Saunders, appeared on the album.

She first joined Hoodoo in 1991 following a period of personal and professional evaluation. In the United Kingdom, the album did well, and Moyet was nominated for a Grammy Award for the single "It Won't Be Long." Nevertheless, the unveiling of Hoodoo marked the start of an eight-year fight for Moyet to regain complete control of her artistic direction. Moyet, like many similar artists (including Aimee Mann and the late Kirsty MacColl), was hesitant to record a radio-friendly "pop" album simply for the sake of generating chart hits.

Essex (1994), Moyet's new album, was also a point of contention for her; her label (now Sony) insisted that certain Essex tracks be re-recorded and re-released, and that additional material be remixed to create a more 'commercial' package in order to be released. Dawn French appeared in the single "Whispering Your Name" video once more.

Sony announced a greatest hits compilation of Moyet's work following the unveiling of Essex. Singles also landed at No. 1 in the UK charts at No. 1. Following a UK tour, one of the first CD sets with "Live (No Overdubs)" was re-released as a bonus live CD. Singles charted again upon re-issue, this time in the Top 20.

Moyet did not record or release a new studio album for more than eight years after the introduction of Essex. During this period, however, she sang of Tricky, Sylk-130, The Lightning Seeds, and King Britt, and was on the Lilith Fair tour's British leg. The Essential Alison Moyet CD was released in 2001, and the Essential Alison Moyet DVD was released in 2002.

Moyet was fired from her Sony job in August 2002. Moyet's first studio album in eight years was signed to Sanctuary Records. The Insects, who had previously produced works by Massive Attack and Madonna, produced Time. The album's release of Moyet, which culminated in a BRIT Awards nomination for Best Female Vocalist as well as a citation for the Mercury Music Award. Hometime was awarded gold in the United Kingdom for orders in excess of 100,000 copies, with no promotion.

Voice, a series of cover versions, was first introduced on September 6, 2004, and it debuted at No. 1 in the UK charts on September 6, 2004. 7. The album was later reissued with a bonus track titled "Alfie," which was scored and produced by Moyet's neighbor (and Academy Award winner) Anne Dudley. In 2006, a companion DVD, One Blue Voice, was released. Within four weeks of its debut, Voice was designated Gold in the United Kingdom.

Moyet signed a recording deal with W14 Music, a Universal Music Group imprint, in December 2006. Moyet was reunited with label head John Williams, who was A&R man for her previous two albums, Hometime and Voice, as a result of the arrangement.

The Turn, Moyet's album, was released on October 15, 2007, a week before the single "One More Time" debuted a week earlier. The collection featured self-penned songs, as well as the three numbers she wrote for the stage play Smaller, in which she appeared with Dawn French. Moyet collaborated with producer/songwriter Pete Glenister on these songs. The Turn debuted at No. 1. On the 22nd of October 2007, the UK Albums Chart reached their peak. The Deluxe Edition of the album, The Best of: 25 Years Revisited, contained an extra disc with re-recorded versions of older hits. During November and December 2009, Moyet supported the publication of a tour of the UK and Ireland. She appeared on "Waiting" by My Robot Friend in 2009.

During his tour of the United Kingdom in 2010, Moyet performed with Jools Holland. She appeared on Holland's album "The Man That Got Away" in the same year.

Moyet appeared with Heather Peace on the final concert of Peace's first studio album, Fairytales, in January 2012.

Moyet revealed on BBC Radio 6 Music that her new album with Guy Sigsworth will be released in 2012, but that "I seem to have forfeited my recording contract because I won't do reality television." No one needs to make an album that is not terribly bad.

Moyet revealed in an interview with Touchbase the following June that she was still recording her album and that she was not rushing it. On her Facebook page, the singer revealed on her Facebook page on January 22nd that she had signed a worldwide contract with London-based record label Cooking Vinyl. Sony Music had reported earlier that Moyet's four solo albums (Alf, Raindancing, Hoodoo, and Essex) were being digitally remastered and reissued with B-sides and bonus information. "The project was Sony's," Moyet said of the remastered albums in February 2013.

On May 6, 2013, the Minutes was published in the United Kingdom. On April 1, 2013, the first single, "When I Was Your Girl," was released. For October, the UK and Ireland were shown on a tour to promote the album. "I avoided listening to anything during the recording and recording of this album, opting instead to be led by my own melodic voice, the one I now have 30-years-in." Moyet appeared at the Burberry Show at London Fashion Week on September 21, 2015. Live for Burberry on September 23rd, she was announced as a digital EP.

After being remastered by BMG on November 25, 2016, it was announced that Moyet's first four studio albums Alf, Raindancing, Hoodoo, and Essex would be reissued as Deluxe Editions on September 27. Each double-disc set comes in a casebound book with the original album remastered from the original tapes, as well as 12-inch remixes, b-sides, and previously unreleased songs.

Moyet's second live album, The Other Live Collection, was released on April 20, 2018.

In 2001, Moyet made her debut in the London West End production of the musical Chicago. She appeared in Matron 'Mama' Morton'. Despite the fact that the play was designed for a short time, it wound up taking six months. She appeared in the play Smaller, which was undertook a regional tour before arriving in London's Lyric Theatre.
