Early years
White was born to French and Italian parents. Catherine "Kate" Alexander, a chorus girl, and her father, Audley White, a paper salesman who left the family when Alice was a child. Catherine died in 1915.
Alice was raised in Paterson, New Jersey, by her maternal grandparents, and she attended classes in Paterson and East Orange, New Jersey. Her grandfather owned a fruit business.
Personal life
Alice and her fiancé, American screenwriter Sidney "Sy" Bartlett were accused of orchestrating the death of British actor John Warburton in 1933. Alice and Warburton had reportedly a lust affair that culminated when he beat her so badly she needed reconstructive surgery. A grand jury in Los Angeles declined to indict Bartlett or White; however, Alice's career was harmed by the bad news.
In Magdalena, Mexico, White married Bartlett on December 3, 1933. She filed for divorce in 1937 claiming that she "stayed away from home" and was awarded $65 per week in alimony.
On August 24, 1940, White married film writer John Roberts, a remarried woman. They married in Los Angeles on April 18, 1949. She sued him for unpaid alimony the following year.
Later career
She left films in 1931 to expand her acting skills, but she was forced to have her career dogged by a controversy surrounding her relationship with boyfriend actor Jack Warburton and future husband Sy Bartlett. Despite marrying Bartlett later in life, she was tarnished and appeared only in supporting roles after that, including Jimmy the Gent (1934) with James Cagney and Bette Davis. Her name appeared on the cast lists between 1937 and 1938. She made her last film appearance in Flamingo Road (1949) and then returned to work as a secretary.
