Alexandre Herculano de Carvalho e Arajo (March 28, 1810 – September 13, 1877) was a Portuguese novelist and historian.
Early life
Herculano's family has humble roots. In the royal employ, one of his grandfathers was a foreman stonemason. Herculano began his early education at the Necessidades Monastery, emphasizing Latin, logic, and rhetoric, and he spent a year at the Royal Marine Academy studying mathematics with the intention of embarking on a commercial career. Portugal was under absolute rule of D. Miguel and Herculano, who became embroiled in the unsuccessful military edicto of August 1831, and they were forced to leave Portugal clandestinely and take refuge in England and France. He led the Liberal Expedition to Terceira Island as a volunteer, and was one of D. Pedro's famous army of 7,500 troops who landed at Mindelo and occupied Porto in 1832. He was involved in all of the great siege's activities while also serving as a librarian in the city archives. In 1832, he published his first volume of verses, A Voz de Propheta, and then another, A Harpa do Crente, two years later.
Privation had made a man of him, and in these little books, he establishes himself as a poet of deep feeling and a powerful voice. The vivacious scenes of Portugal's political aspiration fueled his exile, the adventurous march to Terceira, Porto's heralded defense, and the final battles of liberty. He founded the Panorama in 1837 in imitation of the English Penny Magazine, and in Illustraço he published the historical stories that were later gathered into Lendas e Narrativas; in the same year, he became the Ajuda Palace's royal librarian, which allowed him to continue his studies from the past. The Panorama had a large circulation and clout, and Herculano's biographical sketches of influential men and his literary and historical criticism contributed to their education, as well as the development of knowledge and the state of letters in foreign countries.
Family life
Herculano married Mariana Herma de Meira, an old love of his father, who was born about 1830, but with whom he had no children.
