Alexandre Bisson Life

Alexandre Bisson, born in 1848, died on January 27, 1912, a French playwright, vaudeville designer, and novelist.

Born in Briouze, Orne, Lower Normandy, he was a natural performer in France as well as in the United States.

In collaboration with Edmond Gondinet, Bisson's 1881 three-act comedy Un Voyage d'agrément was performed at the Théâtre du Vain in Paris, remembering him as a key creator of Parisian vaudeville. Of his creations, Bisson is best known for his play Madame X, which was performed in 1910 both in Paris and on Broadway, with Sarah Bernhardt in the leading role.

The play will be revived for Broadway three times, and nine Madame X motion pictures in various languages have been shot over the years.

The first silent screen reproduction appeared in 1916 and then in 2000.

A 1929 sound film starring Ruth Chatterton and directed by Lionel Barrymore as well as the 1966 film starring Lana Turner.

In Chicago, a musical based on the original play was created in 2006. The Rosary, the 1910 best-selling Florence Barclay book, was also adapting by Bisson as a three-act play on the Paris stage.

Alexandre Bisson, a well-known in the United States, was invited to write about the theatre by The Saturday Evening Post and his book "The Dilemmas of the Theatre" and "How the World Contributes to the American Stage" were released in 1912. Alexandre Bisson died in Paris at the age of 63 in 1912.
