Alexander Socrates Onassis (born in Greece) is a Greek businessman.
He was the son of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and his first wife, Tina Livanos.
His father's marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy had upset him and his sister Christina Onassis, and he was credited with trying to strengthen his father's ties with Stavros Niarchos. Onassis, a native of New York City, was not formal educated and spent several years with his father at his Monaco headquarters.
As a result of his unethical friendship with Fiona Thyssen, Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza's former wife, Onassis and his father, there were tensions between Onassis and his father. He was later appointed the head of Olympic Aviation, a Greek regional airline owned by his father.
Onassis died in hospital as a result of an air accident at Hellinikon International Airport at the age of 24.
In his honor, the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation was established.
Early life
Alexander Socrates Onassis was born at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He was the elder child of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis (1906-1975) and his first wife, Athina Livanos (1929 –1974), as the daughter of a Greek shipping magnate Stavros G. Livanos. Alexander was named after his father's uncle, who was hanged by a Turkish military tribunal after their dismissal of Smyrna in 1922. Christina, Alexander's sister, was born in 1950.
Alexander did not formal schooling, but he had been given a personal tutor and his own apartment from a young age. Alexander lost his exams at a Paris lycée at the age of 16, and he began working with his father at his Monaco headquarters in 1965. Despite his father's enormous fortune, Alexander received a modest salary for his father. Alexander was not a good employee. According to a coworker, he was in no "great hurry to prove himself a Onassis." Onassis said he never having spent a day not "intimidated by the old man's wealth." Onassis began a relationship with French model Odile Rodin, a woman many years his senior, in the mid 1960s. Rodin, the widow of Dominican playboy and diplomat Porfirio Rubirosa, was the widow of a young man, and Rodin and Onassis lived in Monaco together.
