Syed Ahmad Shah (Urdu: ) is a Pakistani Urdu poet, script writer, and the founding Director General (later Chairman) of the Pakistan Academy of Letters, better known by his pen name Ahmed Faraz. He wrote his poetry under the pseudonym Faraz. He condemned military rule and coup d'état in the region and was forced to flee by military dictatorships.
Early life
Syed Ahmad Shah, the son of Syed Muhammad Shah Bark, was born in Kohat on January 12th, 1931. Masood Kausar, the ex governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, is his brother. Faraz and his family had been to Peshawar from Kohat District before. He studied at Edwards College, Peshawar, and earned his Master's Degree in Urdu and Persian from Peshawar University. During the reign of General Zia-ul-Haq, Faraz was jailed for writing poems that criticized military kings in Pakistan. Following his detention, he went into exile on his own. He worked in Britain, Canada, and Europe for three years before returning to Pakistan, where he was first elected Chairman of the Pakistan Academy of Letters and later chairperson of the Islamabad-based National Book Foundation for many years.
Earlier in 2008, after a hard fall in Baltimore, Maryland, there were fake claims of his death even though he was being treated in a Chicago hospital. However, he was able to return to Pakistan, which was his home country. Ahmad Faraz died of kidney disease later in life in a private hospital in Islamabad on August 25, 2008. Several admirers and government officials at H-8 Graveyard, Islamabad, Pakistan, attended his funeral on the evening of August 26th.
Ahmad Faraz is listed on a long list of Urdu poets, and he is regarded as one of the most influential modern Urdu poets of the last century.
