Marseille created history when they became the first French club to win the Champions League in 1993.  But just weeks later, a criminal investigation was opened against the club following allegations that they bribed Valenciennes players to underperform against them in a Ligue 1 match so they would remain fresh for their European final against AC Milan six days later. A trial took place in 1995, with Marseille midfielder Jean-Jacques Eydelie handed a one-year prison sentence and general manager Jean-Pierre Bernes a two-year suspended sentence along with a fine, while Valenciennes players Jorge Burruchaga and Christophe Robert were given six-month suspended sentences for their involvement.

Adrien Rabiot admits France team-mate Kylian Mbappe is having a 'rough' time at Euro 2024 and says 'everyone is surprised' by Antoine Griezmann's struggles

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 9, 2024
France midfielder Adrien Rabiot has admitted that team-mate Kylian Mbappe is having a 'rough' time at Euro 2024. Despite his status as one of the standout players in world football, Mbappe has scored just once in four appearances at the tournament so far - a penalty against Poland. Mbappe's cause hasn't been helped by the broken nose that he suffered in France's opening group game against Austria, which has meant that the forward has had to wear a mask in subsequent matches.

Portugal 0-0 France (aet, 3-5 on pens): Les Bleus book Euro 2024 semi-final date with Spain as Cristiano Ronaldo skies glorious chance in extra-time and Joao Felix is the only man to miss his spot-kick

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 5, 2024
MATT BARLOW IN HAMBURG: France arrived in Germany as favourites for the trophy but have struggled to find fluency, been devoid of the usual flair and short of goals. Their first three in the competition came from two own goals and a penalty by Mbappe against Poland. Deschamps made a couple of changes in search of the spark, with Eduardo Camavinga into midfield for Adrien Rabiot who was suspended, and Randal Kolo Mauni up front instead of Marcus Thuram. Mbappe, still wearing the mask he doesn't like to protect his broken nose, led early attacking flurries but the contest opened cagily. Portugal settled into a controlled spell of possession, moving the ball freely and Rafael Leao's strength and speed got the better of Jules Kounde without creating a clear chance.
