England beaten by Australia on DLS in deciding ODI at Bristol despite Ben Duckett ton as batting collapse proves costly with Aussies taking series 3-2

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN BRISTOL: Rain arrived a fraction too late to save England from defeat in the deciding ODI against Australia - but salvation would have been undeserved as a long season came to a soggy end. After their batsmen spurned a glorious chance to rack up a match-winning total, their bowlers employed cricket's answer to the 'dark arts' in a bid to prevent Australia's chase reaching 20 overs - the minimum required for a result. Agonisingly for England, the clouds did not dump their load until Adil Rashid had delivered four balls of the 21st, by which time Australia were 165 for two and 49 ahead on the DLS rain chart.
England captain Harry Brook calls for patience after second ODI thrashing by Australia and highlights his side's inexperience with a shock Adil Rashid statistic

AADAM PATEL AT CHESTER-LE-STREET: It was a statistic that even took Rashid, who has played 137 ODIs, by surprise with the 36-year-old admitting he 'actually didn't know about it' until it was mentioned. For context, his England team-mates at Headingley had a combined 124 ODI caps between them while nine of the Australian side had made at least 100 international appearances alone. This is an inexperienced side already facing serious questions over their attitude and approach.
Australia keeper Alex Carey has the last laugh after a match-defining innings as England fall to 68-run defeat in second ODI clash - despite Adil Rashid taking milestone wicket

England crashed to another comprehensive defeat - their 10th in 14 one-day internationals - to leave world champions Australia on the verge of claiming pre-Ashes bragging rights. In contrast to their opponents' woes, Australia's 68-run victory was their 14th in succession in this format - a sequence second only to the 21 their predecessors reeled off in 2003. And it put them 2-0 up in the final series between the two countries prior to England's Test tour down under next year.
England T20 World Cup PLAYER RATINGS: Adil Rashid bowled as well as ever and was the team's player of the tournament... but others look like their days are numbered
www.dailymail.co.uk,

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN BARBADOS: England's time as the kings of limited-overs cricket has come to an end. Matthew Mott's men surrendered their T20 crown in a 68-run semi-final thrashing by India on Thursday having already lost the 50-over title in abject fashion late last year. Question marks have been left over the future of coach Mott and captain Jos Buttler after a tournament where few players can really say they played to their best.
How England can shock Kohli and Co as Jos Buttler's defending champions look to reach World Cup final with a fiercesome bowler and unpredictable weather in their way
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 26, 2024
LAWRENCE BOOTH: Jos Buttler's side have had a disappointing tournament so far, squeeking through the initial group stages and then narrowly making it through the Super Eights, but they are now two games away from retaining their title. They will, however, be heavy underdogs. The defending champions will need to up their game to earn a result, and hope rain also stays out the way. India, though, have had a strong tournament but are not unbeatable.
NASSER HUSSAIN: Don't forget Adil Rashid... the England bowler showed he is at the top of his game against the United States

Others might have stolen the headlines with bursts of wickets and sixes, but the most eye-catching England performance for me on Sunday was that of Adil Rashid - someone at the peak of his powers. As a team, the USA obviously hadn't played against him before and few had come up against him as individuals, either, and it was obvious they weren't picking him during his return of two for 13. They're not alone on that front, though, and players of the ilk of Pakistan's Babar Azam have struggled against him, because he possesses such great variations and his control is as good as I've seen it.
England THUMP the United States by ten wickets to secure place in World Cup semi-finals - with Chris Jordan taking four wickets in an over before Jos Buttler's brutal 83 off just 38 balls

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN BARBADOS: England are through to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after a superb hat-trick from Chris Jordan on the island of his birth and some monstrous six-hitting from Jos Buttler brushed aside the USA at Kensington Oval. So much for the agonising calculations about net run-rate. The result meant Buttler's reigning champions became the first team to reach the last four - and spared them the torment of hoping for a South African win over West Indies in Sunday night's late game in Antigua. England won't know whether they play in Trinidad on Wednesday or in Guyana on Thursday until the shake-up is complete in Group 1 late on Monday night, with India, Australia and Afghanistan all competing for two spots. One of them will play England next.
England's T20 World Cup semi-final hopes hang in the balance after agonising defeat by South Africa...with Jos Buttler's side needing victory over USA on Sunday for a chance of making the last four

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN ST LUCIA: Victory over the USA on Sunday in Barbados should still be enough for Jos Buttler's side to make the last four, but - not for the first time in this tournament - they are making life hard for themselves, finishing on 156 for six in pursuit of 164. England needed 14 off Anrich Nortje's final over, but Harry Brook - who had played superbly for a 34-ball half-century - was brilliantly caught by South African captain Aiden Markram, running back at mid-off.
England shore up their hopes of Super Eights qualification with victory over Namibia after narrowly avoiding a washout as rain threatened to end T20 World Cup title defence

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN ANTIGUA: Harry Brook helped England dodge the showers - and a bullet - to beat Namibia by 41 runs in a 10-over thrash in Antigua, and leave themselves hoping Scotland did not stun Australia later in the evening in St Lucia. After persistent rain had threatened to knock them out of the World Cup without even taking the park, Brook's high-class unbeaten 47 from 20 balls had helped them to an imposing 122 for five. England's bowlers then limited the Namibians to 84 for three, Reece Topley setting the tone with two tight overs for six runs, instantly raising the required rate to 15. So frustrated did the openers become that Nikolaas Davin retired out for 18, making way for the big-hitting David Wiese.
England ignite their T20 World Cup defence with demolition of Oman as Jos Buttler's side chase down 47 in just 19 balls to lift net run rate above Scotland

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN ANTIGUA: After Jos Buttler (left) won the toss and decided the best way to get the maths back on the track was to knock over the Omanis, ranked 19th in the world, then knock off the runs, Adil Rashid hoovered up figures of four for 11, while Mark Wood and Jofra Archer each took three for 12. For the most part, it looked like men against boys. Only West Indies, who were all out for 45 at Basseterre in March 2019, have been dismissed for fewer in a T20 international by England. On an island that enjoys its cocktails, this was just the tonic before tomorrow's game against Namibia.
England collapse to thumping defeat against Australia in Barbados to leave their T20 World Cup defence in the balance
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 8, 2024
LAWRENCE BOOTH IN BARBADOS: Two games into their World Cup defence, and England are facing the nightmare scenario of failing to qualify for the Super Eights after a dismal 36-run defeat by Australia at Kensington Oval. If Tuesday's rain-off against Scotland couldn't be helped, their performance here veered between the headless, the hapless and the hopeless. It leaves them needing to beat both Oman and Namibia in Antigua, and pray that the Scots' net run-rate doesn't surpass theirs. Honestly, you couldn't make it up. Rob Key, the ECB's managing director of men's cricket, flies home today, but could find himself returning swiftly to the Caribbean if England bow out before what was supposed to be the start of the serious stuff.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY AADAM PATEL IN BRADFORD: Inside an old warehouse in the middle of this housing estate in Bradford is the vision of England's most successful white-ball spinner. For Adil Rashid, pulling this off ranks right up there with his two World Cup wins. When we meet, it is a school morning and he opens the door to the Adil Rashid Cricket Centre. By evening, this place is filled with aspiring cricketers from all around West Yorkshire, developing their skills on one of the four indoor nets. Occasionally, his England team-mates pop by.
Chris Jordan explains why he is 'addicted' to bowling at the death, with the England star making his pitch for key T20 role ahead of World Cup defence

INTERVIEW BY RICHARD GIBSON: It is a job that turns you into a hero or a zero, but England's Chris Jordan says he cannot get enough of the jeopardy of bowling at the death of a limited-overs innings. 'I still very much enjoy it. It's like an addiction, because the prospect of coming out on the right end of it keeps me going back for it every time,' Jordan tells Mail Sport. 'That's my mindset, really, because it's a real top feeling when you win a game for your team - it does a lot for your confidence.'
While spin prodigy is heading to Mecca, Rehan Ahmed will miss multiple County Championship games for Leicestershire this month, although the teenager will be back for England duty in May

Ahmed, the England leg-spinner, is playing in the first round against Yorkshire at Headingley, scoring 28 on the first day, but will be unable to attend the Division Two fixtures against Sussex and Derbyshire, as well as Northamptonshire's visit to Grace Road. The 19-year-old is a practicing Muslim, and he has been given the permission of his county chiefs and the England leadership to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Umrah.
T20 PLAYER RATINGS: ENGLAND's T20 PLAYER RATINGS: Despite losing to the West Indies, Phil Salt and Adil Rashid shine, but Sam Curran and Gus Atkinson's story is a tale to forget
www.dailymail.co.uk,

England was left dissatisfied after losing the fifth and deciding T20 against West Indies by four wickets. A defeat in Trinidad, where England suffered with some familiar batting woes, undid a lot of the good work that saw them bounce back from a 2-0 deficit to a 2-0 series high. Phil Salt and Adil Rashid enjoyed a fruitful run, but Sam Curran, Gus Atkinson, or Tymal Mills were all not successful.
After Jos Buttler's guys are bowled out for 132 on the same pitch they smashed record 267 two days earlier, England loses a T20 series decider against West Indies
www.dailymail.co.uk,
December 22, 2023
On Thursday night, England's Caribbean revival was effectively put on hold as they slumped to West Indies by four wickets in a low-scoring thriller. Adil Rashid, the world's top-ranked Twenty20 bowler, attempted to enact a late heist, but the tourists had a lot to do despite being unable to 132. Rashid's legspinner in Yorkshire barely bowled a loose ball in the series, but it was a contender for his worst, offering hope when the recalled Johnson Charles slapped a wide, full toss to short extra-cover.
After taking seven wickets and keeping West Indies power-hitters in check, Adil Rashid of England has risen to his No. 1 Twenty20 bowler, and it has been 13 years since an Englishman has risen to the top spot in the world's No. 1 Twenty20 bowler after taking seven wickets and keeping West Indies power-hitters in check

RICHARD GIBSON IN SPAIN: Adil Rashid has risen to the No. 1 bowler in the world after his solid form on England's tour of the Caribbean. Rashid in Yorkshire is the leading wicket taker in the series with seven wickets, as well as keeping West Indies' big hitters in check, with a record of 6.43. To reach the summit, the 35-year-old has defeated two other leg spinners in Afghanistan's Rashid Khan and Ravi Bishnoi, both of India.

Jos Buttler skirting the Kensington Oval boundary at an optional net session earlier this week, in deep conversation with his vice-captain Moeen Ali, was more relevant than previous pre-series chats between the two teams. Buttler's right-hand man, and he has taken the armband in a complete sequence during his captaincy, including last year's 4-3 victory in Pakistan, so talking tactics is nothing new. However, this particular talk marked a change of the guard, as Moeen learned his close friend Adil Rashid would have a new on-field sidekick in Twenty20 matches as England prepares for next year's world championship defense in a five-match series.
Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed, twins, are a beacon of hope as misfiring England tries to reclaim their T20 World Cup defence form
www.dailymail.co.uk,
December 13, 2023
As they battle here with Caribbean weather and the West Indies' brawny batting lineup, England plans to have their new spin twins at the center of their world championship defense next year. Veteran Adil Rashid - bringing up centuries in both Twenty20 caps and wickets - and fellow wrist spinner Rehan Ahmed were among the few gloomy figures in another gloomy display as England lost their ninth limited-overs international in 13 this winter. Ahmed, 19, as a wicket-taking power on this tour, has removed vice-captain Moeen Ali from the team's four appearances, not only in attempts to recover against a squad that defeated the six count 14-6 in game one, but also in the World Cup back in June.
With his 100th T20I cap in the West Indies, Freddie Flintoff seems to be more like his old self a year after his near-fatal Top Gear crash
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Following his horrific Top Gear vehicle accident, which took place a year ago today, Freddie Flintoff has been training with England's white ball teams on their tour of the West Indies. In the summer, the former England all-rounder resurfaced in an unofficial mentoring role with the England team, for the first time since his injury as he progresses back to the sport. Flintoff was involved in a fire at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome on December 13, 2022, that left him with serious injuries.
Despite being the team's top run-scorer at the World Cup, Dawid Malan's England future is uncertain after batter is left out of both white-ball squads for trip to the Caribbean
www.dailymail.co.uk,
November 12, 2023
Despite being the team's top run-scorer at the World Cup, Dawid Malan's international career seems to be over. He was left out of both white-ball squads for England's trip to the Caribbean. Malan, 36, who ran in 404 runs straight over Ben Stokes at the top of England's charts, was recently given a one-year central contract by the ECB. And although his departure from the ODI leg of the West Indies tour was no surprise, it's also difficult to see how he will defend his T20 position ahead of the 20-over World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean next year.
ENGLAND WORLD CUP RATINGS: Jos Buttler dominated the title defense, while Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow struggled for runs, but Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid are among the rare positives – especially in the United States

England made a poor showing in India in the cricket World Cup championship defense, losing six wickets and winning just three out of nine matches. In the end, they were a long way behind the four teams that progressed to the semi-finals and barely scratched into the top eight to guarantee a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy, and were a long way off. Few players shone in glory, and a number of them failed to find any form at all. LAWRENCE BOOTH of Mail Sport gives his take on each England player's ranking here.
Since a World Cup fiasco with Dawid Malan, England was left out when considering international retirement
www.dailymail.co.uk,

PATEL PATEL IN KOLKATA: England has wasted no time in selecting their white-ball squads for their tour of the Caribbean next month, with no space for Dawid Malan in either the ODI or T20 squad. Malan was England's highest run scorer at the World Cup, scoring 404 runs, but he revealed earlier this week that despite being snapped up to one year in a row last month, his game against Pakistan might be his last for the team. Despite managing director Rob Key's assertion that Malan will still be considered for T20 selection, it could mean the end of his international career.
