Early life
Adam Kokesh was born in San Francisco, California, on February 1, 1982, and is of German and Jewish origins. He was raised in a middle-class family and is the eldest of five siblings. When he was ten years old, his parents divorced, after which Kokesh claims he took refuge in punk rock.
Charles Kokesh, his father, is a businessman, trophy hunter, and at one time the owner of Santa Fe Horse Park.
Kokesh, adolescent, had an interest in sports, mathematics, and electronics, and his parents had encouraged him to read numerous books. When Kokesh was fourteen, he attended the Devil Pups junior base camp at Camp Pendleton, California.
He attended Stevenson School, a boarding school in Pebble Beach, for his first year of high school, before being suspended for possession of alcohol.
He later attended the Native American Preparatory School in San Miguel County, New Mexico. Kokesh founded the campus radio station during high school.
Claremont McKenna College conferred a bachelor's degree in psychology. In college, he was president of the Libertarian Club. At George Washington University, he later enrolled in graduate studies in political leadership.
Although still attending high school, Kokesh claims he was inspired by his grandfather to enlist in the United States Marine Corps reserves at the age of seventeen.
Following high school's graduation, Kokesh offered to work with the 3rd Civil Affairs Group in Fallujah, Iraq. He received a Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, for his tour in Iraq from February to September 2004, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He worked in schools and mosques, observed house raids, and claims he was involved in a couple of convoys struck by IEDs.
After finishing his first tour, he became disillusioned with the conflict. During his time in Iraq, Kokesh learned Arabic.
Since Kokesh was honorably discharged in September, he remained a member of the Individual Ready Reserve. He was scheduled to return to Iraq for his second tour, but Kokesh was demoted to a corporal and suspended from the Marine Corps after wearing his Marine uniform during an anti-war parade.
