Though some people are becoming more vocal, Miss World's tradition - at least for now - lives on. Eric Morley's 1951 creation of the Festival of Britain, a contest that was officially launched in the United Kingdom, was branded by the term Festival Bikini Contest. In fact, the event's primary aim was to advertise the bikini, a relatively recent addition to the fashion market, and it was reportedly the newspaper that dubbed the tournament, which at the time was considered by some to be rather immodest, 'Miss World.' The pageant introduced a new tag: Beauty With a Purpose in 1980, in an attempt to combat this. The additional challenges of intelligence and personality assessments were put to the participants. However, this was not enough for the BBC to continue broadcasting the event, ditching it in 1984, after which it was moved to other channels including ITV, Thames Television, Sky One, and Channel 5. 'I think these contests no longer warrant national air time,' BBC1 controller Michael Grade said when he stopped the show.'I believe these contests no longer warrant national air time.' They are an anachronism in this day and age of equality and conflict that is on the march.' Here's FEMAIL looks at what happened to some of the contestants after they were crowned in the controversial competition.

How touching is it that the roles were reversed this week after Dave died at home aged 66 at the end of a two-year battle with cancer. Sidney, his trusty sidekick, was on his side, as he had been throughout. It was 57-year-old Sidney who broke the devastating news to fans. I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at the moment,' he said. 'My best friend is on a journey that I can't follow right now.' Every day, I will be missing him and the love and friendship we shared over a half-life.' But what a journey it had been. In 2004, the Hairy Bikers leapt into our lives and onto our TV screens, but we didn't know what had happened. They did not know that they were a pair, but that we did not know.

We all loved Jackie's sincere innocence: Slimming tips. How to Kiss. And yes, your bum does look big in this! JAN MOIR celebrates the triumphantly new magazine for teenage girls, six years after its debut

JAN MOIR: Jackie magazine burst on the scene 60 years ago this month, soaring into the rest of the world on a slick of strawberry lip gloss and a pop music fan. The latter were typically supplied by hunks named David, including Mr Cassidy, Mr Essex, and Mr Bowie, although the lippy came as a free gift stuck to the front of the mag. It was a sensation from the very first issue. In 1964, there were no magazines geared specifically to teenage girls's needs, which was a new phenomenon in itself.

This was the first time inflation hit this high, with Bucks Fizz and Adam Ant riding high in the pop charts just over 40 years ago. The fact that it was so long ago explains why many wealth managers and private investors are frantically looking for ways to survive. 'Knowing which companies are going to do well in the midst of high inflation is a difficult question to answer,' admits Ben Yearsley, investment manager of Shore Financial Planning in Plymouth, Devon. When he says: "Inflation and the possibility of stagnation is far from optimal when it comes to stock market investing.'
