Natasha Richardson, JFK and Abraham Lincoln all suffered catastrophic brain injuries. But in a fascinating new book, a top surgeon asks...Could they have been SAVED?

I was once at a wedding reception and had to introduce myself to the men on both sides of me at the table. Unbelievable as it may seem, on my left was an astrophysicist; on my right a neurosurgeon. The poor duo then had to face endless, tedious jokes all the way through the wedding breakfast - anyone else's work or tasks were dismissed as 'It's not rocket science' and 'It's not brain surgery'. This is the classic putdown, as Theodore H. Schwartz says in his new book - but do we ever really think about what being a brain surgeon actually entails?

The world marks tragic day in history: How the sinking of the Titanic, death of Abraham Lincoln, the Hillsborough disaster, the Notre-Dame blaze and the Boston Marathon bombing all took place on April 15

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 15, 2024
Today might seem like any other Monday, but, to many, it will bring back memories of horror and tragedy. For April 15 is the anniversary of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster (inset top), the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing (left) and the 2019 Notre-Dame fire (top right). The Titanic also sank on April 15, 1912 (bottom left) with the loss of of more than 1,500 lives, whilst US President Abraham Lincoln (bottom right) was shot dead at the theatre on this day in 1865. Lincoln had been visiting the Ford's Theatre in Washington DC with his wife Mary and companions Major Henry R. Rathbone and Clara Harris when he was attacked. The president, who was shot in the back of the head, succumbed to his wounds the  following morning. At just before midnight on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg while travelling on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. Within three hours, the ship had slipped beneath the waves of the freezing Atlantic Ocean. On April 15, 1989, 97 men, women and children were crushed during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. A jury concluded in 2016 that the victims were unlawfully killed and said a catalogue of errors by police and ambulance services contributed to their deaths. On April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker bombs planted by brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev exploded at the Boston Marathon. The attack ultimately claimed the lives of five people. The blaze at the Notre-Dame destroyed much of the roof of the 13th century building, although many works of art and relics inside the church were moved to safety before they were consumed by flames.

In a three-part article to his tanking Truth Social, the comparison was made to a South African leader who served 27 years before removing apartheid. In it, the Republican front runner not only regarded himself as one of the best figures in recent history, but he also revealed how he wanted to avoid the expanded gag order against him in his forthcoming hush money trial in New York. In other blogs, he slammed the judge who granted the order after consistently criticizing him and his daughter, who has worked with several Democratic presidential campaigns, for being biased against him. Trump has compared himself to figures like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as visually stunning stars like Elvis Presley. In addition, it was not the first time he compared himself to the African head of state, despite the fact that the current administration has wrongfully accused him. On Saturday, the 77-year-old reiterated his conviction.

Is it true that Abraham Lincoln had an unusually high-pitched voice?Which other figures from history had unusual voices?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 10, 2024
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: Horace White, a U.S. journalist, characterized him as having "a thin tenor, or more falsetto voice,' nearly as high pitched as a boatswain's whistle. In February 1860, a New York Herald column said that his voice had 'a regular tendency to dwindle into a shrill and irritating sound.' It was a political advantage: his voice had'much carrying power,' and despite the crowd's bustle and tumultuousness, it could have been heard a long distance.' Francisco Franco of Spain was one of the twentieth century's most feared tyrants, influencing audiences and the media. On the other hand, he was an odd figure. He'always seemed ridiculous, a short, ugly man with a shrill voice,' as writer Javier Marias put it.
