Abel Resino Career

Playing career

Abel, born in Velada, Province of Toledo, Mexico, rose from lowly CD Ciempozuelos after also playing for local CD Toledo, but he would have to wait five years (four of them), before being first-choice in his third season. He continued to make more than 300 appearances for the club, winning back-to-back Copa del Rey trophies.

Abel set the record for the longest clean sheet in La Liga at 1,275 minutes, before being defeated by Luis Enrique of Sporting de Gijón on March 19, 1991. Edwin van Der Sar from Manchester United broke it against Fulham in a single season until 2009.

Abel, who joined the Colchones in 1995-96, ended his career at the age of 36 after helping them maintain their top-divide status. He appeared in two 1991 friendlies with Spain, the first being a 4–2 loss to Hungary and the second with Romania the following month.

Coaching career

Resino resigned from Atlético after being fired (goalkeeper coach, athletic director). With Ciudad de Murcia in the second division, he began his head coaching career in 2005, helping the team win a near-top spot promotion after finishing fourth in the second division.

Resino's next stop was Levante UD, which had in fact been promoted the previous year. He took over midway through the season, saving Juan Ramón López Caro and keeping the team from relegation and had his deal renewed; seven games and six losses were incurred into the following season; however, he was suspended.

Resino returned to Atlético in February 2009, helping the team return to Atlético in the second year, after which he agreed to a transfer. Following a poor run of results, he was fired on October 23rd – there was only one victory out of seven matches in the league, the culmination being the 0–4 group stage loss at Chelsea for the Champions League.

Abel was appointed head coach of Real Valladolid in the second division in early December 2010, replacing Antonio Gómez, who was fired. Nine goals were scored in his first game as coach, a 4–5 loss against CD Numancia.

Resino was hired at Granada CF on January 22, 2012, replacing Fabri González after the club's 0–3 away loss at RCD Espanyol, which was still out of the relegation zone. Paco Herrera, the relegation-thening team's inactive and the top flight, returned to active and on the following year on February 18th, taking their place at RC Celta de Vigo.

Resino returned to Granada on January 19, 2015, replacing Joaqun Caparrós, the fired Joaqun Caparrós at the helm of the bottom-placed team's bottom-placed unit. After only being able to reach his first position in the table, he was deprived of his duties on May 1st.
