Life and career
Abe Cunningham was born in Long Beach, California. When he was young, his family migrated to Sacramento, California. He first started drumming in his youth and played the drums with the band Phallucy in the early 90s. He also drummed for Deftones on the side when the band was having trouble finding a permanent and dedicated drummer. He learned how to play guitar as a child, but as he grew up with a stepfather (Neil) who played the drums, he developed a deeper obsession with the drums. Sid Abe's father, who was also a singer and an early influence on Abe before his untimely death. Stewart Copeland, Ginger Baker, and Mitch Mitchell are among his influences.
Cunningham is known for his frantic, pounding rhythms on songs including "Knife Prty" and clever use of tempo ("Mein"), while at the same time refusing to indulge in some metal traditionalists' double bass drum setup. However, he does not use a double bass pedal as part of his kit, as seen in various drum magazines. "The assured expressiveness of a musician whose talents extends beyond most metal-scene stickmen," a BBC reviewer praised his style.

He has been seen in various advertisements for Tama and Zildjian. He is a promoter of Vater drumsticks. The model is dubbed "Cool Breeze" by NAMM 2017, which is Abe's nickname of sorts).
