Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom (born 21 May 1959) is a Maldivian politician who served as the Maldives' 6th President from 2013 to 2018.
Following his defeat in the 2018 presidential race as the nominee of the Progressive Party (PPM), defeating Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed in the second round of the re-run election after the initial election was postponed.
He is the second democratically elected president of the Maldives but he was caught and sentencing a five-year sentence and a fine of 5 million dollars.
Personal life
Yameen is the son of Sheikh Abdul Gayoom Ibrahim, the son of Sheikh Abdul Gayoom Ibrahim. He is married to Fathimath Ibrahim Didi and has three children, two sons, and a daughter. In a reported assassination attempt on Yameen, his wife was wounded.
Career
In July 1978, Yameen started his government service. In Beirut, Lebanon, he completed his undergraduate studies. He began as Secretary at the Department of Finance and then as Research Officer at the Maldives Monetary Authority's Research and International Organisations Division (MMA).
Yameen began working at the Ministry of Trade and Industries on his return from postgraduate study. During his time in ministry, he served many posts, culminating in his appointment as Minister of Trade and Industries under President Maumoon on November 11, 1993.
Yameen, the Trade Minister, supported Maldives in joining the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and other international trade and investment organizations.
