Bellevue Hospital has performed lucrative weight loss surgeries on thousands of patients, including 11 Rikers Island prisoners. The weight loss surgery program, which has been described as a 'high-speed assembly line,' has recruited patients from the NYC Rikers Island jail complex, a notoriously difficult county jail located in Queens. According to two prisoners, the prisoners were unaware of the risks, arrived in the surgery room unprepared, and faced challenges in recovery after returning to Rikers. The hospital suggested that the prisoners consume small, protein-rich meals, including nonfat Greek yogurt and sugar-free Crystal Light beverages, as well as Zumba dance lessons.
