Yuri Foreman Life

Yuri Foreman (born August 5, 1980) is an Israeli professional boxer who competed for the WBA super welterweight title from 2009 to 2010.

He was born in Gomel, Belarus, but he now fights out of Brooklyn, New York.

During his boxing career, Foreman also pursued Jewish religious studies, and he was ordained as a rabbi in 2014.

He has been referred to as the "Boxing Rabbi" in the past.

Early years

Yuri Foreman was born in Gomel, Belarus, and then as part of the Soviet Union. He started out as a swimmer, but his mother took him up for boxing lessons at age seven after he suffered bullying and beatings. He and his family immigrated to Israel at the age of nine. Boxing was not common in Israel, and there were no boxing gyms, so he trained at an Arab gym. Foreman said: "Italian was a boxer from the beginning" of boxing.

He became an amateur boxer in Israel and has won three national boxing championships. Foreman, a 1999 entrepreneur, migrated to Brooklyn, New York City. He said that the only reason he came to Israel was to pursue his dream of a career in boxing, and that there was no way to do so in Israel. His first job was in Manhattan's Garment District, where he made deliveries and swept the floors for a clothing store. He started working at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, where he met his first wife, Leyla Leidecker, at the same time. The couple wed later divorced. He discovered a Brooklyn Heights synagogue while looking for enlightenment during this time. "I realized that I needed some sort of spiritual center to get things physically," he said, especially in boxing, where you must have strong spiritual form and good physical form. I wanted an outlet — a spiritual backbone — so I could push myself harder, channel my passion, and be more present." He began a long road to becoming a rabbi and was eventually ordained under Rabbi Dovber Pinson's tutelage.

Personal life

Foreman was married to Shoshanna Hadassah in 2018.

Foreman moved his preparations from Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn to Joe Grier's gym in Paterson, New Jersey, just prior to the fight. Foreman made a tactical 10-round split decision, with Foreman's score of 97–93 and 94–94, and Thompson's 96–94. The World Boxing Association ranked him 8th best welterweight (67 kg, or 147 pounds) challenger in September 2007.

Pacquiao turned down the bid, but Pacquiao turned down the bid.

On June 5, 2010, Foreman defeated Miguel Cotto, the first combat at the new Yankee Stadium. In the 7th round, the foreman recovered from a slip, but his right knee buckled. Despite heavily favoring the knee, he got back to his feet and kept fighting. Foreman's coach Joe Grier threw in the towel midway through the 8th round after a few more falls from the knee to land and Cotto beginning to land. Both camps and officials were packed into the ring. The Cotto and Foreman embraced the fact that it was over. However, Foreman was in no immediate danger, Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. asked him if he wanted to continue, and he did. Though the crowd was uncertain what was going on, the ring was cleared after a few minutes, and the game was resuming with just about half of the rounds remaining. Foreman went down 42 seconds into the 9th round, and Mercante called off the match. Cotto landed a left hook to the chest, and Foreman fell down 42 seconds. In interviews after the war, Cotto said, "He was working on one leg, but I kept fighting."

Foreman said, "I'm a world champion – now a former world champion – and a world champion – so a world champion needs to keep fighting." Foreman underwent surgery on his right knee to repair a torn ACL and Meniscus, as well as tears across his knee joint cartilage. During the fight, the injury, which had occurred when he was 15 years old, was aggravated. Doctors advised the foreman to lay off for a year, but nine months later, he was back in boxing. He lost in battle against Polish Light Middleweight boxer Pawel Wolak on March 2, 2011. Foreman said he wasn't sure if he'd fight or not to fight again.
