Yungen Life

Clive James Brooks (born 1 February 1992), also known as Yungen, is an English rapper, singer, and songwriter from Herne Hill, South London.

Yungen's first success was for his 2011 F64 freestyle video for SB.TV, and by 2015, he had been nominated for Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards.

Yungen draws inspiration from many musical genres, ranging from rap to R&B, and his own experimentation.

"Bestie," Yxng Bane's song, debuted in the UK Singles Chart in October 2017 and later became his first platinum single in February 2018.

Early life

Clive James Brooks was born on February 1, 1992 and was raised in Herne Hill Estate. Although his songs portray the darker side of his childhood, he expresses admiration for his upbringing. "Growing up on an estate was all to me," Yungen said in an interview with the Evening Standard. Brooks' friends on the estate dubbed him 'Yungen,' which later gave him the inspiration for his stage name. Brooks' older cousin inspired him to try MC'ing, but his fear kept him from seeing it as a potential career. As a child, Brooks listened to a variety of genres, allowing him to draw on a variety of influences in his songs. There was a diverse variety of music styles in his household, due to his father's work as a Hip hop DJ. Brooks was inspired by his friend's death in 2008, and he decided to pursue music as a career. Artists such as Wretch 32 and Giggs inspired Yungen to pursue a career in music as he could relate to and connect with these artists. Yungen is also a huge fan of Liverpool F.C.

Yungen Career

Career

'Hometown' is Yungen's first video on YouTube in 2010. However, the video was taken down by the company due to its fame. The video was re-uploaded on Yungen's original YouTube channel, Yungen TV, in 2011. SB.TV, founder Jamal Edwards, whose work culminated in the production of a Yungen's F64 Freestyle video on the channel in 2011, viewed the video. Yungen has since stated that his insecurity as a youth stopped him from displaying his music sooner; before filming his first music video, he had previously avoided all cameras.

In 2012, Yungen joined Play Dirty and introduced his mixtape Topic of Discussion in April 2013. He continued to help Naughty Boy throughout his 2014 world tour, as well as in the United States and Australia. At the same time, Yungen launched Forever Yung, his clothing collection. Artist Stormzy, Wretch 32, and Krept and Konan developed a two-part project called 'Project Black and Red' in 2014, which culminated in artist Stormzy, Wretch 32, and Konan.

Yungen promoted the project with a sold-out gig at the O2 Academy Islington in November 2014, which featured guest appearances from several of the artists included on the album. On his SoundCloud the same year, he debating the darker aspects of his upbringing, including the death of his friend in 2008.

Yungen released "Ain't on Nuttin" with rapper Sneakbo in August 2014. The two remixes (Part 1 and Part 2) included rappers from Section Boyz, Bashy, Stormzy, and Ghetts.

After the introduction of Project Black and Red, Yungen was nominated for the 2015 MOBO Best Newcomer Award and announced his first official deal with Sony RCA in November. Yungen was named one of the top new talent to watch for 2016, by BBC Radio 1Xtra, and his album "Comfy" debuted in February 2016. Yungen's new song "Off the Record 2" debuted in April 2016 and at a sold-out show at Village Underground. "Take My Number" a R&B-inspired title was immediately followed by the debut of Angel on May 10, 2016. On December 6, "Take My Number" was followed by "Doing It Correct," a Sneakbo-starring Haile. On February 5, 2016, Sony, Yungen's "You Don't Know Me Like That" and "Cuffing Season" under House of Forever Yung, and "You Don't Know Me Like That" independently.

Yungen gained more fame in 2016 because of a verbal dispute with rapper Chip (formerly known as Chipmunk). The discussion started when Chip commented on Yungen's MOBO Award nomination, which escalated as each artist wrote and revealed details about the other. This exposure ultimately helped Yungen's rapping reputation and his target audience expand when the conflict was settled. In 2017, Yungen hosted the inaugural function at the Victoria House in London, in which she became the face of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars x Nike Flyknit. Yungen held another sold out show in April, this time at KOKO as the support artist, this time with Yxng Bane. "Bestie" by Yungen's first single of 2017 was released in June and climbed the UK charts, peaking at number one in October and then platinum in February 2018. The song's music video was shot spontaneously in Dubai, where the rapper was on holiday, and Yungen demanded Yxng Bane to fly out and film it. Later this year, Yungen independently launched "Fools Gold" on House of Forever, which was inspired by his dissatisfaction with the fact that people were posting their lives on Instagram.

Yungen appeared at a number of festivals in the summer of 2017, including his headline set on the second stage of the Wireless Festival on Saturday 8th, where Skepta appeared on the main stage immediately after. Yungen then proceeded to perform Jamaica House at the Indigo on the 10th of August and the V Festival on the 20th of August. In September 2017, Yungen announced that his The Chosen Tour would begin in Glasgow and end on 1 December at the Dublin Academy. He accompanied the announcement with two bonus tracks, "Chosen" and "All Night" featuring Mr Eazi on Friday, October 27th. Tickets for the Chosen Tour, as well as those for Shepherd's Bush Empire, were sold out. Yungen appeared on Steel Banglez' "Bad" alongside MoStack, Mr. Eazi, and Not3s in November 2017, and the song debuted at number 30 on the UK Singles Chart in November 2017.

On January 5th, Yungen partnered with Clean Bandit and Julia Michaels to produce a re remix of "I Miss You."
