Young Thug debuted on stage in 2010 as a guest on rapper TruRoyal's album "She Can Go." Young Thug captured the attention of fellow Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane, who went on to sign Young Thug to his Asylum/Atlantic imprint in 2013. Thug's first project on the label, 1017 Thug, was later released, and his fourth mixtape. Music critics praised the mixtape for its original design. Thug's Pitchfork Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention and Complex's The 50 Best Albums of 2013. FACT named it the best mixtape of 2013 and the Guardian named it number five on their Top Mixtapes of 2013 and ranked it at number five on their list of the Top Mixtapes of 2013. Young Thug's album "Picacho" was listed as one of the best songs from the mixtape, although it was not released as a single on a number of 2013 year-end lists, such as Rolling Stone's Top 100 Tracks of 2013, and Spin's 50 Best Songs of 2013.

Complex included him in their list of 25 New Rappers to Watch Out For in July 2013. Young Thug's "Stoner" was his first commercial release in October 2013. Wale, Jim Jones, Jadakiss, Iamsu! A string of data leaks from Young Thug's archives to the internet in 2015 revealed hundreds of unreleased tracks. Young Thug's planned debut album was supposed to be published in 2015, but Lil Wayne's forthcoming album, Tha Carter V. Lil Wayne, was not thrilled about the tribute, advising the audience of a show in April 2015 not to "stop listening" to Young Thug. Young Thug revealed that he was referring to Barter 6 rather than his debut album after claiming he's been threatened with lawsuits. Young Thug's official debut album, which translates to "HiTunes," will be released on April 18, 2015. Young Thug revealed "I manage myself" in May 2015, amid much rumors about who he was signed to and managed by, Gucci Mane's 1017 Records, Future's Freebandz, Lyor Cohen's 300 Entertainment, and Birdman's Rich Gang. I'm signed to Atlantic. I have a big, special contract with Atlantic, but it is not limited to Atlantic. "My homie is a birdman." He also revealed that he would be dropping another mixtape before the album, titled Tha Carter V.

Thug unveiled the well-received compilation mixtapes Slime Season and Slime Season 2, to discourage the further dissemination of leaked music. Young Thug revealed in late June 2015 that he and Kanye West had discussed the possibility of a joint album together, with both agreeing after a meeting in the spring. Kanye was impressed after hearing the first time details about his unreleased music, but Thug said he was captivated. "I was allowing him to hear all the songs." Then he said I was like Bob Marley and he wanted to do an album with me.

Young Thug appeared on West's album The Life of Pablo in 2016, and West announced that further collaborations with Young Thug would be announced on Tidal. 300 Entertainment released "Pacifier," a promotional single for Young Thug's debut album HiTunes in July 2015 (stylized as 'Unreal.' Mike Will Made-It's production was praised by critics for its experimentation with more severe vocal scatting. Young Thug unveiled a mixtape named I'm Up on February 4, 2016. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.

Young Thug appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon alongside Gunna on October 20, 2019. Due to a remix featuring Travis Scott's second single on October 31, 2019, a song from the album called "Hot" starring American rapper and fellow labelmate Gunna became the album's second single on the album. On the Billboard Hot 100, "The London" peaked at number 12 and 11, respectively. Young Thug and American singer Chris Brown revealed their joint mixtape, Slime & B, on April 29, 2020. It was published on May 5, 2020, the former's 31st birthday. "Go Crazy," the mixtape's lead single, debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Thug's highest-charting single as a lead artist. Thug performed with British rapper M.I.A. on September 25, which was a collaboration. Travis Scott's single "Franchise," which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making Thug's second number one single. He had fourteen chart entries on the Hot 100 during the year, owing to numerous collaborations with other artists.

YSL Records, along with Young Thug and Gunna, released their second compilation album Slime Language 2 on April 16, 2021. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, featuring guest appearances from Travis Scott, Drake, Rowdy Rebel, Lil Baby, YTB Trench, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Uzi Vert, Coi Leray, Coi Leray, Big Sean, NAV, Skepta, and Kid Cudi, with production mainly handled by Southside, Wheezy, and Turbo. "Take It to Court" and "That Go!" two singles supported it. On April 23, a deluxe version was released, which featured eight new songs. DaBaby and Don Toliver were among the artists on Thug's deluxe, which included artists such as DaBaby and Don Toliver.

Young Thug's second studio album Punk debuted in July 2021, with a release date of October 15, 2021. The album was first revealed in August 2019 and was released just after So Much Fun's debut. On August 20, 2021, "Tick Tock" was released as the album's intended lead single, but it was omitted from the final track chart. Kobalt Music Group announced a new global publishing contract with Young Thug in November 2021, 2021, following the introduction of Punk. Young Thug's press room, global synch, and creative services will be handled by Kobalt in this agreement.

Kevin Liles, an executive vice president at Warner Music Group, announced that he was leaving the record label conglomerate on Tuesday. The 56-year-old executive announced his news in an internal memo that he later shared on X (formerly Twitter). Liles, who rose to the upper echelons of the music industry after getting his start as a DJ, also announced that he would be leaving Warner's subsidiary record label 300 Elektra Entertainment.

Just hours before his sudden passing at 34, Rich Homie Quan announced he would be performing at Nick Cannon's music festival. The Atlanta rapper, who collaborated with Young Thug as Rich Gang, was found dead in his home on Thursday. His family announced his passing but has not disclosed the cause.  His girlfriend Amber Williams found him on the couch not breathing and without a heartbeat, according to the 911 call obtained by TMZ. He began to foam at the mouth when she moved him.
