Early life
An was born in China and spent a year at an international school in Macau learning English. His parents left China for greater economic opportunities in Asia, and they migrated to New Zealand. When An was seven years old, the family lived in Auckland. He has three younger sisters, one of whom named Avena was born in Auckland.
Despite not being educated in a Chinese system, An is able to speak Cantonese and Mandarin fluently. However, he is unable to read or write Chinese. He hasn't figured out how to recognize some Han characters, though he has learned to recognize them. He had an ex-girlfriend from Taiwan who helped polish up his Mandarin.
Anson was educated at Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga, New Zealand; he studied music and was active in numerous school productions.

Career
An early actor in small projects before being given his first big break with Ghost Bride in 2012. He eventually decided to move to Australia to seek new opportunities. "I think Australia has more chances for non-white actors to break into film than we do in New Zealand...I also think Australia has a lot more actors in general than we do in New Zealand." An was cast in Dead Lucky, which he believes is a huge chance for him because it is a major leading role with Rachel Griffiths. With the Walt Disney Pictures live-action film version of Mulan that reunited him with Dead Lucky co-star Xana Tang, he took the leap to American cinema.
