Early life
Winnie Harlow was born in the Greater Toronto area on July 27, 1994, the daughter of Lisa Brown and Windsor Young. She is of Jamaican origins and has two sisters. At the age of four, she was diagnosed with the persistent skin disease vitiligo, which was characterized by depigmentation of areas of the skin. Harlow was reportedly branded a "cow, zebra, and all sorts of other disparaging words throughout her childhood by students both black and white. She's since being bullied verbally, leading to her changing colleges several times and dropping out of high school, which she considered suicide after.
Career
On Instagram, Harlow was discovered by America's Next Top Model host Tyra Banks, and subsequently became one of the 14 finalists of the 21st cycle in 2014. She was the first female to be cast on ANTM. She was disqualified in the second week of the finals and joined in a group called "comeback series," where she continued to participate in the cycle's photo shoots with the other eliminated contestants in an attempt to return to action. She was announced to have earned the highest average public vote score after finishing the comeback series, and then returned. In episode 13, she was eliminated for the ninth time overall.
Harlow modelled for the Spanish apparel company Desirel, becoming the brand's official brand ambassador after being barred from America's Next Top Model. In September 2014, she walked and left for Ashish's spring/summer 2015 collection in London Fashion Week. She has appeared in fashion magazines such as i-D and Dazed, as well as the fashion website Showstudio.com. Harlow modeled for the Italian clothing brand Diesel for its spring/summer 2015 campaign, which was shot by British fashion photographer Nick Knight. The final result was announced based on the positions at the end of lap 68 (i.e., the scheduled distance from 70 laps) as a result of the implementation of the Formula One sporting rules. The errand did not have a major effect on the race results.
