William Wei Li-an (born 5 March 1987) is a Taiwanese Mandopop and folk-rock singer-songwriter.

He gained media attention as the winner of the first season of the reality television singing competition Happy Sunday in 2007.After signing a contract with Linfair Records, Wei released his debut EP Slowly Wait in 2009.

The following year, Wei released his eponymous debut album William Wei.

He received 4 nominations at the 22nd Golden Melody Awards and subsequently won Best New Artist.Wei released his second studio album Someone Is Waiting in 2012 and his third studio album Journey Into The Night in 2014.

The latter received 2 nominations at the 26th Golden Melody Awards and the lead single "Wolves" ("?") won him the Best Composer award.On 12 September 2015, Wei held his concert, "Free That Girl", at the Taipei Arena for the very first time.

Life and career

Wei grew up in Taichung, Taiwan. Wei Chin-long () and Chen Yu-mei () were both professors in National Chung Hsing University and National Chung Cheng University respectively.

Both of his parents were choir members when Wei's grandfather was a songwriter, and both of his parents were also choir members. Wei grew up under their influence and has a strong affinity for music. However, Wei did not buy any musical equipment as a child because he felt it would be exhausting. Rather, Wei loved drawing and aspired to be a comic artist as a child.

Wei's father bought him his first guitar during his high school days and he developed a passion for the instrument. He began learning the basic chords on his own and continued to practice it whenever he was free. After attending a songwriting showcase by his school music club, Wei was inspired to start writing his own songs. He began writing songs and exhibited his work on StreetVoice, a music-publishing website for independent songwriters. The Netizens and Wei made his songs a hit, and Wei became one of StreetVoice's most well-known songwriters. Although the bulk of Wei's works were primarily Folk Pop, he also experimented with various musical styles such as Bossa Nova, R&B, Soul Jazz, and Disco.

Wei was accepted into one of Taiwan's best universities, National Taiwan University, and studied Foreign Languages as a major. Wei decided to sign up for a school singing competition for fun, and Jay Chou performed Black Humor (). He won the competition unexpectedly and was selected to represent his school in the reality television singing competition. Happy Sunday.

Wei's good results in the competition have consistently impressed the judges. He covered songs from many artists, including David Tao, Stefanie Sun, Wang Leehom. Wei ultimately won the contest and was crowned the first winner of Happy Sunday.

However, Wei made a bizarre decision by refusing to give away the prize package from the partnering music label. He decided to put his budding music career on hold while continuing his study. Wei felt that he was not prepared to be a singer and did not want to be tied by a contract. In addition, he was dissatisfied with the new success and wanted to take a break after the arduous singing competition. Wei returned to his student days and began releasing his songs on StreetVoice. On StreetVoice, Wei's work dominated the music charts, and several of his creations remained in the top ten positions for more than two years. He began writing songs for singers like FanFan, Angela Zhang, and Rene Liu.

Wei decided to sign a new contract with Linfair Records in 2009. On March 13, 2009, Wei released his first EP, titled Slowly Wait (). It includes two songs 'Slowly Wait' () and Good Weather (). Both songs were fan favorites from StreetVoice. He began promoting his EP by visiting 14 live houses in Taiwan. To market his first EP, WeiTV, a parody channel on YouTube, was also launched.

Wei's first self-titled debut studio album () was released on June 4, 2010. The album was a commercial success and was the seventh best-selling book on the major online bookstore () in 2010. On August 17, 2010 a 'night' version of the album was released, but it was limited to 5,000 copies worldwide. Because of Love (), the second hit on the overall KKBOX digital music chart in 2010, ranked 13th on the overall KKBOX digital music chart.

Critics also applauded Wei's debut album. The Chinese Musicians' Association and Hit FM selected it as one of the top ten mandarin albums in 2010.

In the prestigious 22nd Golden Melody Awards, Wei was nominated in four main categories. The album was nominated for Best Mandarin Album and Lead Single, 'Have or Have Not' () received a prize from Wei for Best Composer. Wei was also nominated for Best Mandarin Male Singer and then went on to become the Best New Artist.

On September 18, 2010, Wei hosted his first national concert tour, The Fleeing of a Two-Legged Bookcase (). He covered songs from his debut album as well as some of his all-time favorite songs by other artists. The concert was recorded for live broadcast. The Fleece of a Two-Legged Bookcase was later held in Taichung on September 25.

In late 2010, Wei was called to compulsory military service. During his military service, he served as the ambassador for the anti-drug movement. Wei continued to write songs during this time in preparation for his second studio album. Wei completed his 13-month military service and was discharged on December 25, 2011.

Linfair Records invested over NT 1 billion in filming The Bird That Saved The World, a Wei film. In 2010, the filming was completed within a tight deadline of sixteen days. In Taiwan, the film was released on April 6th. An accompanying soundtrack was released earlier this year in support of the film's success.

Wei's second album Someone Is Waiting was released on August 3, 2012. Following the success of his first album, Wei's second album Someone Is Waiting was released on August 3. Critics and followers raved about the album. Both the Chinese Musicians' Union and Hit FM have selected the album as one of the top ten best albums of 2012. In the KKBOX Music Award, "Still" (one of the songs in Someone Is Waiting received the Best Soundtrack of the Year award. In 2012, "Still" debuted at number 10 on the overall KKBOX digital music chart, gaining a tenth position on the overall KKBOX digital music chart.

Wei held his second concert tour Through My Lenses festival in Hong Kong and Taipei. Both concerts were sold out.

On March 25, 2014, Wei released Journey Into The Night, his third studio album. Journey into The Night leaned toward a more experimental direction than the previous two albums. Wei faced his biggest fears in his third album while experimenting with metal rock, hip-hop, 2-step, and rock, which was inspired by Ang Lee's film Life of Pi. Wei also upgraded his public image to make him more mature and masculine. Wei transformed his boy-next-door appearance into a bloodthirsty werewolf in the lead single 'Wolves' music video. A three-dimensional art installation called 'Bird and Wolf' was on display at Huashan 1914 Creative Park as part of the album's promotion. Wei also embarked on a By Your Side () concert promotion tour, and visited Kaohsiung, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, and Beijing.

In 2014, the album was a commercial success and was the fifth best-selling book on the major internet bookstore (). It was also the seventh most streamed album on music streaming service KKBOX. On the overall KKBOX digital music chart, the third single, 'By Your Side' () was ranked 5th.

The Night itself received generally glowing feedback, with critics lauding Wei for expanding and integrating more styles into his repertoire of folk and experimental rock. At the 26th Golden Melody Awards, the album received 2 nominations. Wei was nominated for Best Mandarin Male Singer and 'Wolves' received Wei the Best Composer Award.

Wei produced his second film, The Grand Song, in October 2014 (). The filming took place in Guizhou's villages.

Edward Lam, the theatre director, had invited Wei to perform The Theme Song of Theatre Play What Is Sex? (). At the very last scene, Wei performed 'May Have Been', the play's theme song.

Wei's rising fame has earned him endorsement contracts and opportunities to perform for soundtracks of television drama series. On August 16, Wei released his fourth studio album, It All Started From An Intro. Wei's album continues to experiment with new music styles, such as Argentine Tango, Electronic Dance Music, Pop, R&B, Fingerstyle guitar, etc. Wei was one of ten finalists for the 'Artist of the Year' award at the 12th KKBOX Music Award. The award is given to the top ten performing artists on KKBOX based on total number of songs downloaded on KKBOX.

In the 2017 animated Sony Pictures film Smurfs: The Lost Village, Wei lent his voice to Brainy Smurf.

Wei's announcement on September 2nd, 2018, he had left Linfair Records and formed Awesome Music, his own music company. His resignation was not well-received by his previous label, which accused Wei's mistaking of his employment had ended arbitrarily. Linfair Records has also filed a lawsuit against Wei as a result. Wei was invited by Giddens Ko to write a song for his film Till We Meet Again, which was based on his book 'Yue Lao' (). Wei co-wrote "Red Scarf" with Jerry C and Ko, which became the most hit song in 2021. The song has received over 60 million views on YouTube and has topped music charts in several countries. In the annual Top 100 countdown, Hit FM has rated it as the 'Song of the Year.' Wei released the song in Korean and Japanese for the film's international premieres due to the song's success. I'm More Sober When I'm Drunk, Wei's first English album I'm More Sober. The album is based on Wei's recent heartbreak stories, which included drowning his sorrows in alcohol. The album was well-received and ranked one of the top ten albums of the year by Hit FM. 'R.I.P.' is the lead single on the lead song. On KKBOX, he topped the Western Single Chart. Wei revealed his latest concert 'See You Tomorrow', which will be held at Taipei Arena, and both shows were sold out in minutes after going on sale.
